U.S. Presidential Elections 2008
Carinthia replied to moderateamericain's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I always liked Bill Clinton. I liked him even more in a historical sense, after watching the Bush regime at work. I do not like what he has been doing the past couple of weeks. He did a lot of harm to the campaign. Hillary is quite capable of fighting a good battle and her husbands intervention on her behalf was overkill. -
Let's not forget that the RCMP kill you when you get to the airport. Apparently there is now a spy satellite that they have lost control of and it's going to crash somewhere. The odds of it crashing down upon a gaggle of tourists in Canada is a high pobability I bet!

Obama's hit on Hillary regarding Walmart was a great one. I hate what Walmart stands for. With the cost of living going up and up, many of us have no choice but to shop there. The shrinking middle class and those below the poverty line are completely over a barrel. Obama was clearly pointing out that she is all about partisan politics and the status quo. She was born into the upper middle class of yesteryear and has lived a priviliged life since she was a young woman. I believe that she truly has a will in her heart to try to identify with us little people but that is merely an ideology, which she will foresake when push comes to shove. She has demonstrated her ability to do this by (as Obama pointed out), voting for the bankrupcy bill but then she said she hoped it wouldn't come to pass. She stuck with the status quo by voting for the war. She says all the right stuff but she will always cave to the big boys and back up whatever agenda they have. With her at the helm it will be business as usual. She continually spouts off that she has 35 years of experience over Obama, but what I see when she gives him those looks is, "How dare you upstage me, I am entitiled to this". Gee, I wonder where this sense of entitlement comes from? The Presidency is not handed down as an imperial right, it is earned. -
Absolutley agree. We have a couple of laptops at my office and I have had to use them on occasion, which was enough for me to know I'd never own one. Unless of course I became rich enough to be able to throw the thing out the window on a whim. My pet peeve are sales people in the smaller stores who answer the phone just as I get to the cash register. I then have to wait while the phone person gets served immediately over me who has already been standing in line for 10 minutes.

The biggest issue that should have been addressed in this campaign is the election process. Seems to me an overhaul is long overdue. What a confusing system, not to mention the ballot machines. No paper trail? Huge room for fraud? The more complicated a system is, the more room for error. I dunno, I wouldn't have much confidence that the person, who after such a long time, had really won at all. -
What would be the reason for this rule? Lawsuits or something? If there is no fear of legal reprisals, where is the harm? I hope I can still refer to the Prime Minister as just plain old Harper.

Has there not been a bit of tampering with the U.S. Constitution 'by you know who' in the last 7 years? As in precedent setting? -

Huckabee: Amend Constitution to be in 'God's standards' http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Huckabee_Ame..._Gods_0115.html The United States Constitution never uses the word "God" or makes mention of any religion, drawing its sole authority from "We the People." However, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee thinks it's time to put an end to that. "I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view." When Willie Geist reported Huckabee's opinion on MSNBC's Morning Joe, co-host Mika Brzezinski was almost speechless, and even Joe Scarborough couldn't immediately find much to say beyond calling it "interesting," Scarborough finally suggested that while he believes "evangelicals should be able to talk politics ... some might find that statement very troubling, that we're going to change the Constitution to be in line with the Bible. And that's all I'm going to say." Geist further noted of Huckabee that if "someone without his charm," said that, "he'd be dismissed as a crackpot, but he's Mike Huckabee and he's bascially the front-runner." -

If I could, I would vote for Obama. Hillary supported Bush in his quest for war, although now she says she thought she was voting for inspectors to go into Iraq to look for WMD's. Bull!! She said yesterday on Meet the Press that she wasn't the least bit worried about Obama prior to the New Hampshire primary. If she wasn't, why did she get all choked up and act clearly distressed the day before? If she wins I would vote for Huckabee. McCain is another war supporter. -

True. Let me rephrase, anybody who had planes and bombs then. Happy now? -

Those days were different times. The Geneva Convention was alive and well, albeit not followed to the T, then either. If the Americans had bombed the camps killing thousands of Jews, other nationalities and some of their own, I can't imagine how that would have gone down in history. You can be sure it would have been viewed as genocide for the rest of time, regardless of how it may have ended of the war sooner and with less loss of life. Nobody would have noticed that part. -
America Envy/Anti-Americanism - Whence it Came
Carinthia replied to jbg's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Most of the folks I talk to are anti Bush/Cheney and they are from both sides. I have heard the anti American (rarely) theme as well and to tell you the truth, I did not give much thought as to the their political leanings. I will take notice of that in the future. Actually, from my experience on this subject with people here, I have heard little true anti American sentiments. Jokes yes, but nothing that I would call seriously hating Americans in general. Hell, as it's so cold here, most of the people I know, take their vacations in the winter and head off to the States for a month. As well, the big retirement dream here is to buy up that big RV and "travel all over the States". Hear it all the time. -

Guess it would depend where you live. I work within the business community in my small town. Many of the people I speak with on a daily basis are right wing and the sentiment is anti American from the standpoint of the Iraq War and the Bush/Cheney junta. -

Have we forgotten that this is the man that has just finished killing 66,000 innocent Iragis? And all in the name of taking out one man, Saddam Hussien. Bush is as out of touch with reality as Hitler was. -
Excuse me, the correct terminology would be "breasts". You're the boob!

It's nice to know that Starbucks is a good company. I do remember though, that they sued a Native Reservation somewhere in upper Canada because they named their coffee shop "Starbucks". Ingenious of the Natives, I thought. But after much public bruhaha the real Starbucks caved and dropped it. I like my own brew the best. I don't know why I quoted you to post my thoughts marcinmoka. I hit the wrong button.

When Hilary choked up and said "I just don't want to see our country go backwards", she was really saying "I just don't want to see our country go Barack-wards". Either you are a humble person to the people or you are not. You can't play it like a card and she will, for the next week, at least. -
U.S. Presidential Elections 2008

Could it be that the media fudged the poll numbers to sway the vote re Obama/Hilary? Like they've never done that before. If they did, the amazing thing is, this time it didn't work. Perhaps it never has worked and all the blaming of the media in the end means nothing, as people will inevitably vote how they want. I would imagine that all the electoral academics will be studying tonights fiasco for many months to come.
