  1. I think you just made August's argument for him. A male and a female are essential to the flavor, consistency, and texture of marriage. Anything else is not marriage. No, you just don't like the answers. Likewise, why is the consensual, and contractual relationship between an incestual brother and sister fundamentally different from a legal, consensual, and contractual relationship between two unrelated persons of the opposite sex? Mayo without eggs is not mayo. It may tase good, it may even be better for you but it isn't mayo. A union other than a man and a woman is not marriage.
  2. Not only does the UN run in the face of tyranny (Iraq, Sudan, Rwanda, Kosovo). It rewards nations with records of gross human rights abuses by appointing them to the Human Rights Commission. How can anyone take this organization seriously when they appoint nations like Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia and now Cuba and Zimbabwe, to make decisions regarding human rights.
  3. No. Just submitting the possibility that Rush might now have some empathy for those who become addicted to pain killers. I think he was pretty dignified.
  4. We're always a little more forgiving of those on our side aren't we? The truth is when this story first came out, I was angry at Rush for being hypocritical. But then realized that I couldn't remember ever hearing Rush lecture about drugs. I looked into it and all I found were a couple comments from 12 years ago. I'm not sure what you expect from him. He inadvertently ended up addicted to drugs due to severe back pain. There's no doubt in my mind that conservatives are held to a higher standard than those on the left. It must be because the left doesn't have any standards from which to fall from. Yes, and maybe Rush does as well. That statement was made 10 years ago.
  5. No you're a dupe! No you're a dupe!... round and round we can go. Regarding the accusation that I refuse to question my beliefs, it just simply isn't true. I think you say this because I don't agree with you, and because I touched on Chomsky who appears to be a sacred cow for you. I never said it was, don't put words in my mouth. In fact I think drug law in the US is way to harsh. I think people on drugs need help not jail time. But that doesn't mean I don't think drugs don't ruin lives and are bad for society. Yadda yadda.
  6. Shakey, since the day you joined the forum you've displayed your distain for Albertans. Unfortunately I don't think this attitude of looking down your nose at the rest of Canada is unique among central Canadians. Comments like those from Justin Trudeau exemplify the central Canadian attitude who said, referring to the west, "I love spending time in Canada's backyard". But the best illustration of eastern ignorance is the number of government programs and flawed democracy which ignores the west and almost seem to be put in place to intentionally piss off the Alberta. IMO central Canadians are the epitome of what they claim to hate so much about Americans. They're arrogant, brag to everyone that they are the greatest, do what ever they want without considering the effects on others, and think they are the center of the universe. Yet in spite of this, Alberta has managed to lead the country in progress and innovation. It shouldn't be surprise that we'd feel more in line with the US than Central Canada.
  7. Oh I've read a little Chomsky from time to time. But mostly I find it difficult to read material opposing US opperations in Cambodia and Vietnam from an author who extols the virtues of genocidal manics like Pol Pot and Mao.
  8. I find this funny coming from one of Chomsky's sheep . I'm personally not a huge fan of Limbaugh. But I do give him credit for publicly coming clean. And as with everyone, I do not expect perfection from him. I think it's reasonable to give him a little leeway considering he became addicted because of severe back pain. But it appears that his comments were right, drugs do destroy lives. It isn't surprising that his enemies saw this as the perfect opportunity to lynch him.
  9. Thankyou Black Dog. But the dates of the comments are back in the 90's. Before he was addicted to pain killers. It's also important to note that he became inadvertantly addicted to highly addictive oxycontin after a back operation. It's not like he was out snorting coke and looking for a party.
  10. I laughed too when I saw that it was from Chomsky. So cliche. The pied piper of ideological college students.
  11. LOL This is what I hear from the anti-Bushites: "I hate Bush and cannot understand how anyone would vote for him. So I must disparage and scoff at those who voted for him." Isn't that in fact bigotry and intolerance. The irony kills me.
  12. Evidence and citations with dates please Black Dog.
  13. Perhaps I will be proven wrong. articleStill those who are so sour that they feel they have to leave will find little escape from Dubya in Canada, since so much of our news is about the US. Those who do take the plunge could be turned off by the high taxes. But a more likely scenerio would be that they'll enjoy the entitlements. Like a good buddy said to me "you probably shouldn't talk with your travelling friends about your political ideology. Travelers usually don't work, and people who don't work are usually liberal."
  14. But I do live in Bushland. Albertans like our US neighbors and generally like Bush. Almost 10% of my city is American. What ever ideology people in this country have, I think most of us would agree that we'd be better off without Ontario.
  15. Wouldn't this country work so much better without Ontario? Maybe Quebec too. I like Quebecers individually but collectively they're a big problem. Ah well, we can always dream.
  16. Rewriting history hmm. Was this before or after they left communist re-education camps? Is this why South Vietnamese were scrambling for the last helicopters as they left the US embassy in '75? I don't think the war in Vietnam was the right decision, but I think to say that the people in Saigon wanted to be united with the North is ignorant. Go to Vietnam and ask the people about it.
  17. Here's some help. lame duck n. 1. An elected officeholder or group continuing in office during the period between failure to win an election and the inauguration of a successor. An officeholder who has chosen not to run for reelection or is ineligible for reelection. 2. An ineffective person; a weakling. paper tiger n. 1.One that is seemingly dangerous and powerful but is in fact timid and weak: “They are paper tigers, weak and indecisive” (Frederick Forsyth). 2. the nature of a person or organization that appears powerful but is actually powerless and ineffectual; "he reminded Mao that the paper tiger had nuclear teeth" By the by, it is because of us "lonely supporters of aggression" that you are free to speak your mind and not under Germanic fascist oppression or Soviet communist oppression.
  18. I'm with Eureka. This is a forum for political discussion not a spelling bee. Lecturing people on typos and spelling is not only petty it's supercilious.
  19. Hmmm. True. Isn't that what our own system is based on? Majority rules? But with respect to legality, it the invasion was indeed illegal should not the UN have passed resolutions against the US (of course they would not be enforced) to cease all action against Iraq? France, Germany, Russia, China, OPEC arguably have enough econmic power to impose sanctions, no? August what is your opinion of the use of the buzzword "unilateral" with respect to the war in Iraq?
  20. Self proclaimed authority. Any threat the UN makes rings hallow, because they don't enforce anything. Like it or not the US has world authority and NATO has world authority. The UN is just a lame duck paper tiger. Nothing they say carries any weight. Ask those who have suffered in Rwanda or Sudan. Does anyone else find the irony in this comment funny?
  21. Really. So how does Tony Blair and the UK fit in with your unilateral opinion? And I guess by your logic the US "unilaterally" invaded Kosovo since they shouldered the burden. And Somalia, and Haiti, and Gulf War '91, and Japan and Korea... Straaawww Man.
  22. What's your point? The South Vietnamese were invaded by communists. Why don't you go to Saigon and ask some of the people how it felt. I have. Ask them how they feel about N. Vietnamese coming down and taking their jobs away from them, even today.
  23. I believe Krusty has beat me to the punch and soundly refuted your arguments but allow me to add a few points. "all intents and purposes"? Now you're just being obtuse. I would like to know exactly how many troops from other countries would be sufficient for it to not be unilateral in your eyes. Actually the other 91 unenforced security counsel resolutions set the "dangerous precedent", not your annoyingly repetetive scapegoat, George Bush. When one of those unenforced resolutions threatens the US, they'll defend themselves. The only mistake made was Bush listening to Powel and going to the UN in the first place. I would also add, it's tough to take seriously an organisation that has Libya and Syria chair it's human rights commission. LOL How did I know you'd resort to that weak explanation. You're blind loyalty is hillarious.
  24. Lol. As opposed to what? regurgitating the latest talking points from counterpunch.org? Touching moment at the State of the Union address don't you think?
  25. First of all the US didn't invade Iraq on their own. It wasn't "unilateral". Second if it was illegal, who was there to enforce this law? Why didn't the UN unite and punish the 30 countries that participated in the invasion with sanctions or otherwise? A lot of whining and crying by Kofi, France, Russia, and Germany does not constitute illegality. Without enforcement the law ceases to exist.
