  1. I have read a report that says the patterns of infection and death are not consistent with normal patterns of transmission from one person through a village, but indicative of many being infected all at once. I am sure this is an ongoing area of study. I think dna evidence and oral records may have the edge over your hypothesis, but prove me wrong.
  2. Agreed, the epidemics were likely was very early in the colonization process, the fur trade era ... when the Euro presence was primarily churches and the military, 'clearing the way' for settlers ... perhaps? Carrying out their mandates perhaps?
  3. They are above the law. By agreement, they are specifically exempted from Iraqi law, and from US military law, of course, and I think by some technicality from US or other law. But what about International Law? But of course that would be up to the UN/US forces to enforce ... hmmm
  4. I would say, bluntly, that the people of the west coast and elsewhere recorded in memory the deliveries of the piles of blankets to their villages, and the devastation. I have read a report that says the patterns of infection and death are not consistent with normal patterns of transmission from one person through a village, but indicative of many being infected all at once. You may refute this with Euro-Canadian literature, but can it ever be the ultimate authority, being in conflict-of-interest?
  5. Is it not possible to be pro Israeli and not anti-Palestinian? Nobody wants anyone to suffer. I am not religious of any nature, just human: 20 Sept. 2007: Cabinet decision will impose collective punishment on a civilian population, lead to grave breach of International Law Israeli rights groups condemn proposed state sanctions against Gaza civilians: Seven Israeli human rights organizations jointly warn that yesterday's Cabinet decision to limit the electricity and fuel supply to the Gaza Strip and to further restrict movement in and out of Gaza will exacerbate the existing humanitarian crisis there. In addition, the sanctions constitute a grave breach of the foremost principle of international humanitarian law: the obligation to distinguish between combatants and civilians. In addition, the decision is liable to constitute a violation of one of the absolute prohibitions of international law: the ban on collective punishment. The coalition believes that these sanctions will also not prevent armed groups from launching rocket attacks on Israeli communities. The Israeli Cabinet's claim that the proposed sanctions will not affect the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is false. Limiting the electricity supply will drastically reduce the functioning capacity of hospitals and health clinics. In addition, limited electricity will reduce Gaza 's water pumping system, and will cripple its sewage system and water supply. Thus, the Cabinet's decision not to cut Gaza 's water supply is not a humane gesture because the other sanctions will effectively diminish it in any case. The human rights organizations urge the Cabinet to reverse its decision to impose collective punishment on the Gaza Strip – a grave violation of international humanitarian law. The coalition of human rights groups consists of: The Association for Civil Rights in Israel; Bimkom – Planners for Planning Rights; B'Tselem – the Israeli Information Cent e r for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories; Gisha: Legal Center for Freedom of Movement; HaMoked: The Center for the Defense of the Individual; Physicians for Human Rights; The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel.
  6. Good question ... and what can we do about it in the meantime while the Security Council solves its problem? The revolt has been violently suppressed, but it has not failed. I would predict it is now more universal, and there will be a lot of refugees. Can we boycott goods from those countries that arm the oppressors?
  7. http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums//index.php?showtopic=9873 This has been discussed here, and there is more information there. As for smallpox, that is an interesting topic perhaps deserving of its own thread with an introductory link to evidence to support your hypothesis ... perhaps?
  8. I like the checks and balances in our present system. The Constitutional Monarchy is not just an add on: It has specific functions that would have to be rebalanced. I think this is a very tricky issue to open up. As the 'Crown in Canada', the Governor General has some powers in case of an 'ill-intentioned' government, for example.
  9. I think it covers incidents where people call in to the police in fear of an accident - erratic driving - whether drunk, racing, or just weaving trying to shave a few seconds. We all know them. The drivers that give us the shivers.
  10. Thank you for that update. Too bad he didn't introduce it that way in the first place. Just bad politicking, I'm afraid: didn't survey his audience appropriately.
  11. I think this is a very true statement: Canadians just keep looking for a manager they can trust. Agreed. He's deck fluff. There may well be one now, or several. Do you know? I am curious what is the implication of minivans, Hijabs and garbage bags? Are these people simply moving by any chance?
  12. read back please.
  13. He was there to make his point with McGuinty. It would have been ruder to shake his hand and then hit him with the 'cancer' point, I think. Sometimes the scripting gets in the way of being human, and people notice that in politicians, I think. People look for those little clues.
  14. You have missed a development ... Joew says he went outside with the nephews to get 2x4's.
  15. Is this a traditional Indigenous participatory democracy by consensus model, higgly? If so, it will be very interesting to watch how it works.
  16. Those are both dangerous offenses that put numerous people's lives at risk. I am ok with that criteria. If it changes, then we look at it again. 'Slippery slopes' is an over simplification ... a suppressor of thought.
  17. I am sure it was already posted. However, if you want to do the research to defend your point of view, here's the link... http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=...e&scoring=d
  18. People noticed Harper tampering with their right to know too. How the government handles the media does affect how people will vote next time. McGuinty's snub of the man with cancer won't slip people's minds either, I think. He didn't even say 'Sorry for your troubles' or show him any compassion - all politics. That was sad. Ben Chin is a communications type who spoke to the media as if they were in his employ. Wakeup call for him. I thought Quattrochiocci did a smart thing, and I thought CH handled the fallout well by just reporting it. That allows the public to make up their own minds.
  19. Sam may well have had the upper hand with one, as it is reported that he had the fifteen year old pinned to the wall with a stick across his throat. However, I simply cannot believe that Joe would leave, given the possibility that the 15 year old may be joined by others. I think it is possible that Joe doesn't want to admit he was a witness to Sam's assault on the 15 year old. imo.
  20. With respect, mikedavid, as a perpetrator you are not a credible spokesperson for the feelings of people subjected to hate language.
  21. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2007...uin-070928.html "Ontario issued mining claims … for Frontenac Venure on our lands, which are under comprehensive claim and weren't supposed to be being used at all. So we consider those claims invalid," said Sherman after the arrival of the canoes at Victoria Island following a six-day journey from Ardoch, about 113 kilometres southwest of Ottawa. "Uranium mining's not safe. Neither is exploration." She said Frontenac Ventures has already built roads over sensitive wetlands and destroyed an aboriginal trapline, and the Algonquins fear the company will contaminate local waterways with its test drilling. I didn't know there was that much damage already. This article doesn't mention it but I believe the Algonquins are pursuing a lawsuit against Frontenac Ventures for damages too.
  22. Yes the accounts of Joe's behaviour and presence or lack of are confusing. It would be extremely unexpected, I would think, for him to leave Sam alone with "15 warriors" I would think.
  23. I thought the impetus for Tory's platform came from the Christian schools. It seemed to me that was evident when he said creationism could be taught with evolution in public schools.
  24. Tolerance must be severely circumscribed. Now that is an interesting concept. I may agree, but my intolerances may be different from yours. Who gets to decide whose intolerances are allowed and whose are not? Not you or me. That is why we have the laws we have. What if I don't want to be considered part of 'your culture', as you describe us? And Canada "ethnically homogeneous" ... since when? Puleez. The Scots, Brits and Irish are ethnically different, and different from the Ukranians and Hungarians and Czechs and Francophones and Estonians, etc etc. It isn't "ethnically" you mean at all, is it?
