Merry belated Christmas Mr. President
Black Dog replied to Biblio Bibuli's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I wonder: is the enthusiastic endorsement of a pro-Bush newspaper owned by a cult really what the Cons need? Is Stephen Harper a Moonie? If I was the Liberals, I'd be all over his one like a dirty shirt: "Gift from Canada"? More like "Gift to Martin"? -
Gaza's settler population at the tiem of "disengagement" was just under 8,000. There's more than 230,000 in the West Bank and growing. When you realize that, you'll see that the Gaza withdrawl was little more than a P.R. ploy and not a serious step towards peace. Or, in all lkliehood, this "divide and conquer" strategy will further the bitterness towards Israel and ensure peace is always out of reach.

That article reads like a piece from the Liberal campaign office. -
50% Say U.S. Winning War On Terror
Black Dog replied to tml12's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Not a chance. We've nothing to offer. As well, most Canadians would oppose such a course of action. -

So you've read about an incident (the details of which the alleged targets themselves can't seem to get straight) and used that sketchy information to "prove" your point? Seems like Hitler was right when he wrote that "in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie..." The real point of all this is that only a blind fool would ascribe hate to any one segment of the political spectrum. If you think lefties have the monopoly, you've never listened to Ann Coulter, or the pack of racist howler monkeys over at Little Green Footballs and Free Dominion. Or check this story out: Douglas County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists. -

Conservative position on Iraq
Black Dog replied to BubberMiley's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
We live in a representative democracy: that is, the citizens elect individuals to make decisions on our behalf. In the last election, the majority of Canadians voted for parties that were in favour of same sex marriage. Now, obviously, few people probably based their vote on that single issue, but the positions were clear. -
Harper won't siften marijuana possession laws

Yeah, the Netherlands, with their lower rates of drug use and incareration are such a bad example.... Which is why I see them as ass-backwards reactionaries. -
Which raises the question of, if the Palestians are so incorrigable, why is Israel continuing to settle thousands of Jews next door to them?

House Democrats Embarassed
Black Dog replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
You should figure out what the term quagmire means before you start making comparisons. The U.S. trrops in the Balkans can be redeployed at any time, as their prescence is not required for maintaining the peace. So the Balkan committment is no more a quagmire than postings in Japan, or Italy or any other allied nation. And really, if it is such a big sticking point, why haven't the Republicans pulled the troops out during their 5 years in office? -
Um..let me think abut that. No. I stand by my statements. Wow. You. Are. Pathetic. Again:

Well, you've offered no evidence any such incident occurred. And-surprise surprise!-the allegations are bunk. -

So why does anyone give a rat's ass what Clinton said 6 years ago? It's a red herring. -

Let's be clear: to the degree that the United States defends us, they do not do so out of the kindness of their hearts. They are protecting their interests. Thus, Canada doesn't owe them squat, especialy when it come sto starting needless wars in far away nations. -
Globe & Mail "loves" born-again Christians
Black Dog replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I remain convinced that if this group didn't have the word Christian in their name, you'd probably label them activists yourself. And I don't see why you think activist is a perjorative. But then, i also don't see this discussion goiong anywehre but in circles. And so.... (Oh, I just found this Guardian article) -
Globe & Mail "loves" born-again Christians
Black Dog replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Correction: I fail to see a single joke about born-again Christians as being indicative of a bias against them or part of a larger conspiracy by the media to deride anyone of the Christian faith. Nor do I find the characterization of a group of self described Christians (face it: if they weren't avowedly Christian, you would never be defending them) engaged in "nonviolent direct action" as activists to be belittling (and really, I don't buy your allegation that only one news outlet-the CBC-has used the term; in one CTV article up oin their website right now, the group are referred to as activists twice). In short, your outrage is completely misdirected. -
Well, the U.S.'s big sophisticated military didn't prevent four airplanes from being hijacked and flown around for hours before being used as kamikazes to kill more than 3,000 people on 9-11. I don't think our nation's defence policy should be based on covering every single possibility, but should focus on the most likely threats. We need to find a role and focus on doing it well. Not just spend a bunch of money for the sake of spending money.

This conspiracy against Christmas goes straight to the top! They should call it by its original name: Saturnalia (google it).

Canada is 9,984,670 square kilometres of most frozen tundra. That's a helluva lot of territory to cross. Most major population centres are mere kilometres from the U.S. border, which would bring any invader within easy striking distance of the U.S.(who would under no circumstances permit a hostile invasion force to waltz into one of its chief trading partners). Suppose someone decided to airdrop a force into Fort MacMurray? They'd have to first cross thousands of kilometres of hostile airspace and drop a large force into the middle of nowhere, miles away from any resupply. There's only a handful of countries with that kind of capability (including ballistic missiles). I'm more worried about an alien invasion than an attack from a foreign country.

Globe & Mail "loves" born-again Christians
Black Dog replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Dude: activists aren't necessarily partisan. And I'm willing to bet that if you looked at their website (complete with photos of CPTmembers blocking IDF soldiers from firing on Palestinians, and statements decrying U.S. abuse of Iraqi detainees), you'd change your tune. The problem is you can't seem to get your head around the idea that "Christian activist" isn't a derogatory term per se. In the context of the CPT, it's entirely apt. What mindset is that, pray tell?
