  1. Wasn't America always democratic Anyways, as for the right wing up here being quiet, a poll showed a majority of Canadian Alliance voters would vote democrat, and I'm sure the same would go with most conservative voters. Remember Canada is a very left wing liberal country. Our conservatives would be considered closer to the Dem's then the GOP. I think it depends where you sit in the Conservative Party of Canada. Republicans are for the most part pro-life, pro- capital punishment, against gun control, against national health care, etc. etc. etc. Despite the rhetoric of the left this characterizes very, very few supporters of the CPC. As people from the Canada politics thread may know I support the CPC here. I supported the Democrats in the US. If I were a US citizen I would probably lean Democratic, but the absence of party disicipline in the house makes it more important there to really look at your local candidates than it is here.
  2. Nice attempt at changing the topic. Any comment on this comment?
  3. I should have been clearer. How is this for a re-type? That a comment about a female cabinet minister's hair was included in a press release issued by a left-wing activist group is hypocritical. Had a right-wing group made such a comment in a press release it would have been attacked as sexist by a multitude of left-wing sources. It is even more galling that a representative of Greenpeace tried to defend the comment.
  4. Fair enough, but there is a reason that Meech Lake was so reviled in public opinion. That is probably the reason why we won't see Quebec sign onto the constitution. *distinct society* *nation* use whatever term you want but The Rest of Canada won't accept special status for Quebec enshrined in the Constitution.
  5. OK, I shouldn't have used the word IS. Please answer the MacKay question. Do you think that his comment was sexist? No I don't care to hear your views on his lying. Just your views on the comment itself. Not the comment and the gesture, just the comment. If you want to split hairs over the words *it* and *is*, then it is only fair to split hairs between *comment* as opposed to *comment and gesture*.
  6. What I usually do is ctrl+f (apple+f for mac users) on each page. A minor pain in the butt still easier than reading post by post.
  7. Easy tiger. It's kinda tough for me to defend what you think I insinuated...
  8. Thanks for moving the thread over here. I do not think that MacKay's comment was sexist. I think that his comment *and* gesture might have been interpreted as sexist. The comment alone was innocuous.
  9. I don't think there are many actual Republican supporters here on MLW. I am definitely a supporter of the CPC but perfere the Democrats in the US. Who is this 'right wing' you think should be speaking up?
  10. I've been consistent in my positions. I didn't cry sexism when mackay called stronach a dog, and I'm not crying sexism now. Show me where I cried sexism, here I'll help you out: To repeat. Fine you didn't *say* that you found the comment sexist. Are you actually reading the posts you reply to? Still leads to the the question, why avoid the topic of this thread? If you want an answer about MacKay post on one of the old threads on the topic or start a new topic.
  11. The night of the long knives was definitely f*cked up. I spoke to somebody in the room when the deal was agreed to. Basically Levesque wasn't going to sign anything. The PM and the nine other Premiers recognized that. They thought it was better to get a deal without Quebec than to leave without a deal. I personally thought that wasn't a reason to justify the bad deal that was struck. The constitutional headaches of the decade or so following the night of the long knives is evidence of what a bad deal it truly was...
  12. Yes, dense indeed. The original post never tried to draw a parallel to the MacKay incident. Only the left-wing apoligists tried to do that. A question about the fairness and open-mindedness of the left lead to the comparisons. Do remember a spokesman from Greenpeace tried to defend the original remarks. Dr. Trimble, chairwoman of the Department of Poli. Sci. at the U of A condemned the original remarks. She is definitely left-leaning but also very fair and open-minded. Her reaction to the comments are laudable.
  13. Fine you didn't *say* that you found the comment sexist. Still leads to the question, why avoid the topic of this thread? The question is, if it were a Liberal cabinet minister and a Conservative group had made this comment wouldn't the left be crying sexism?
  14. It clearly is trolling. During a "lockdown" of the boards you would expect the posts deleted and the poster banned. Guess the lockdown isn't happening. Hmmm, I wonder why...
  15. I know that you did. Why won't you condemn this horribly sexist remark?
  16. If fair-minded and true to their principles condemn the comment.
  17. I heard it was the 60th warmest. The silence on the left is deafening!!!
  18. Imagine the cries of outrage if a conservative group had mentioned the 'best hair' of a female Liberal cabinet minister. Sexist and hypocritical is the only way the describe the following quote from the Climate Action Network in this press release. Kudos to Dr. Trimble for chastising the group. A big boo to Greenpeace for trying to defend the quote. Ahhh, you gotta love double-standards.
  19. Really? What about his track record? The Liberals get everybody in worse shape financially by Income Trusts, the Conservatives get everybody made better off. Net win for the Conservatives. The Liberals get everybody who voted Conservative in 2006 who will change their vote because of Kyoto. (Less than 1,000 votes nationwide ) The Conservatives get all the voters who like the fact we cut the GST, passed the accountability act, etc, etc, etc...
  20. It's not that simple. What could he accomplish by putting Kyoto and Afghanistan on the table at the same time? He has no interest in signing on to Kyoto. Period. NATO already sees it needs to do more in Afghanistan. Either the help will come *OR* Canada will be part of the International mission withdrawing. Lacking in Foreign Affairs experience. Jason Kenney said it best in QP yesterday.
  21. The Dems will definitely pick up the House. Anything short of 225 seats will be considered a poor showing for thiem. (A majority is 218) The Senate is going to be the nail biter. 50-49-1 either way is a real possiblity. (Although Lieberman isn't really an independent.) My guess is the Dems will get between 230 and 235 House seats. The Senate race to watch are VA, TN, MT and MO. If the Dems take 3 of those 4 they take the Senate.
  22. Alberta should be partaged? Did he mean portaged? I guess you could do it but it would be pretty cold and you would need super solid canoes.
  23. The EU put Kyoto on the agenda after the Canadian Government officially announced they would not try and meet the unrealistic goals of the protocol. It was made clear, both publicly and through backchannels, that Harper did not want it on the agenda. They went ahead and put it on the agenda anyways. Dictate, scold, chastise ... whatever term you want to use. The only purpose of having that item on the agenda for the meeting would have been for the EU to express their displeasure at the PM. Our Prime Minister could use his valuable time for much more constructive things. With the 'lockdown' in effect some people might consider that 'typical tactic' comment as trolling.
  24. dobbs, in US politics I probably agree with you more often than not. My gut tells me you are probably right. Do you have a link to any of these observers?
