There has been accounts of kids misbehaving and acting like idiots when teachers used to horsewhip kids, some kids responded to horse whipping, some didn't. However, it's not the horsewhipping itself that kids responded to, its the fact that there is a consequence to bad actions, and the consequences don't have to involve violence. The problem is when you have some bozos who don't do anything and think their kid is a little angel no matter what.

I don't know, i thought those schools on those cheesy movies had huge student bodies. Must be a US thing, I don't know. The point is that some high schools are enormous. Like I said, its a psychological thing with kids trying to find and establish their place on the social ladder. Some kids feel that pushing other kids around is the key to rising up the food chain. This is one of those crappy things that not much can be done about it. I think smaller schools would be better in that those kids could be more easily supervised, that however is pricey. Here's another thing of beauty to think about, what genius thought of putting grade 9 and grade 12 kids in the same building. I mean we're talking about kids at very different stages of development, that has bad idea written all over it.

Anderson Cooper had a bullying special on CNN. Apparently it has a lot to do with the fact that putting kids in an environment with many other kids results in a pecking order being established and people maintain their spot by picking at others. A fair amount of the people who were bullied, become bully's themselves. Sadly, a law passed isn't going to do anything because we know how kids feel about rules. The best way to deal with this starts at home and having as much parents as possible showing kids how to properly deal with people, and parents actually doing their jobs as parents and not letting the tv do the babysitting. If a parent can't raise a family properly, they can close their legs. Having kids go to a 5000 kid school and social media doesn't help the situation either, it is like adrenaline for it and makes the situation more potent. Something tells me we're going to be going to more tutors and parents with money paying to have their kids educated in a smaller environment.

Outstanding, instead of rebutting the points of the article, you just declare it garbage. What Krugman says is garbage, and I'll go one step further and tell you why; anyone who goes on Fareed Zakaria and makes the case for massive government spending for a space invasion and defends that point is saying garbage. Do you think we should spend all sorts of money on a space invasion defense? The UK is still going through withdrawal because of the massive debt, and tax/spend policies. I didn't say that slashing spending was going to be pleasant in the short term. It's not, but it makes for a more solid and prosperous future. Its working right now, the UK is in the withdrawal phase, you really need to get out of that short term thinking because its that kind of thinking that got us into this mess in the first place. And no I'm not wrong, Anyone who quotes Krugman shouldn't be taken seriously in an economic discussion. My line of economic thinking predicted the crisis, the severity of the crisis, and the causes; your line of thinking caused it and makes it worse. Medicine sometimes tastes bad, but we have to swallow it. -
Harper's conservatives and erosion of Canadian politics

Bloody hell, an easterner talking about the "facts" of e wheat board. It was made crystal clear out west that the Tories were going to remove the monopoly. Do you know what happened, rural western Tory mps nabbed more than 50% wins in many cases. Do you even know how a farm is run? To say that farmers will go broke because there is no monopoly is flat out ignorant. -
Patrick Kane does not back check, yet he was a key piece. Washington needs better 3rd liners and stay at home d men. Ovechkin is not a Crosby and if he is wired to be a sniper, than a sniper he shall be.

Read the link. Now you are just plugging your ears and saying la la la la when facts are presented to you. My link Hoover did what you wanted to happen and FDR made it worse. Just stop now. -
Why are cyclists seen as sacred by the left?
blueblood replied to Boges's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Well we can all be poorer safe people then. No, no they get tossed in a pile. Time is at a premium, and those shields take time farting around with. The best safety precaution is using your head. That means keeping away from pto shafts and gears/chains, and turning machinery off when servicing, and using blocks when dealing with weight suspended by hydraulics. -

Much like other gov't regulations that make things more prohibitively expensive. No risk no reward. Yes, and my pile of safety shields that I have removed to make servicing/maintenance is getting larger and larger. Like the saying goes, if your stupid enough to have your hands around moving parts, you probably aren't going to last long shields or not. Bike infrastructure downtown would be next to impossible, the real estate value is obscene and space is at a premium. But there are already paths, just the pedestrians might have to make some room. -

Side guards aren't the issue, bikes shouldn't be sharing the road with vehicles like that in the first place. This isn't 1913 when bikes and cars went as fast as each other. They are expensive and safety features on heavy equipment are a pain in the ass. Here's a better idea, you see a big ass truck, leave. On my big trucks I have so many mirrors on the passenger door, My view of oncoming traffic is greatly obstructed because for some reason I need to see the ground right beside the passenger door. -
Looks like the UK embassy was raided. 1979 all over again.

Is a bicycle going to turn a pedestrian into road pizza? -

blueblood replied to Boges's topic in Local Politics in Canada
They will if the sidewalk has enough pedestrians to impede the flow of cyclists enough to reduce the speed to where they have to walk. You have to remember a cyclist dodging a pedestrian is far safer than a car dodging a cyclist and running the risk of a car on car collision. Bikes are more suited to dodging than cars and trucks. -

Do you know what the speed differential is for cars and bicycles? Are you saying that bicyclists can't get off their bikes and can't walk them? I'd sooner have an inconvenienced pedestrian than a bicyclist road pizza. And it's much easier to dodge a pedestrian on a bike than a bike weaving in and out of traffic. You have far more visibility, maneuverability, and stopping ability on a bicycle than a truck. Have you ever drove a tandem axle truck in tight spaces? Not a good time, and let's not get into driving a super b train on urban truck routes with cars weaving around. -

It's the lesser of two evils. Inconvenience people walking or run the risk of being road pizza, choose wisely. -
And every successful businessman had to sink some money in growing his company. Same as when Edmonton Calgary and Ottawa were struggling and Quebec and Winnipeg version 1 failed. Economy determines gate revenue along with prestige of the product. Right now the NHL is on an upswing. And American teams have local/regional deals, it's a wash. Canadians didn't show up in the nineties. And didn't show up for the grizzlies and expos. Read my links of NHL vs. NBA on attendance. The NBA is also significantly gate driven and there are venues with pathetic attendance numbers.

How so, the experiment isn't done yet and the links say we have growth. Doesn't sound like a fail to me.

See there is this thing called a bike can stop on dimes and the guy can get off his bike and walk it when there are too many of them. It would take quite the situation for a bicyclist to kill a pedestrian, not so much for a car killing a bicyclist. Keep the slow stuff on the sidewalk. -
Economists Support Occupy Wall Street

What the hoover policies of big government? Did you not read the link? So Hoover racking up spending 50% from 1929-32 didn't happen? If that's laissez faire then Obama is part of the tea party. -

5 myths about the great depression The "depression" of 1920 lasted a year and a half precisely because the government did nothing. Had they done that in 1929, there wouldn't have been much of a problem. However Hoover/FDR tried to inflate prices which ironically benefits producers which tend to be the rich guys leftists don't like and screws over consumers. Had prices been allowed to drop, consumers would have been able to afford more products. To say Hoover was a laissez-faire individual is flat out ignorant. Whats wrong with falling prices? If we kept that attitude we wouldn't be able to have computers and smart phones all over the place. -
Curses an essay!!! Having Brazil's situation wouldn't be bad. High growth and millions of people just joined the middle class. THat country as a whole is becoming richer. No, that would be big government and their proposterous regulations that have created an economic situation that favors extremely big companies, the ones that can afford to pay to comply with said regulations while the little guy has to shut down. What is the gov't doing having that kind of influence for sale in the first place? Productivity is good, that means more goods get made which results in lower prices for consumers. Keynesian economics of the 40's to the 70's didn't work. It was a false utopia that came crashing down and we're still paying for it. It led to the rise of Japan, then the rise of China and the rest of Asia. Do you know what solved 70's stagflation, our bitter friend high interest rates. That depends on where you are in the country. Western Canadians are enjoying larger paychecks because we have more customers for our products. Talk in the barber shop is not how bad the job situation is, its how easterners shot themselves in the foot. Now for the electric power situation. Consumers are going to try and demand as low a price as possible, unless they are fools and are advocating for a carbon tax. That means the companies have tight margins to work with to make money otherwise they shut down. You also have to remember who the shareholders are, and a lot of regular folk are shareholders and don't want to see their savings/retirement raided. If the citizens in your scenario got pissed off like what they did in Russia, they did nothing but screw themselves. Those companies are just people trying to make money, when those companies voluntarily exchange wages for labour to make more money it makes more people richer. You have to realize that its a two way street when discussing economics, and that proceeds are divided fairly not equally, which benefits everyone. A big problem is when people try and equate corporations with the aristocracy. Corporations got their money because of voluntary exchanges, that means the corporation gave a usefull product in return for money. Aristocrats got rich because government decided that they should be rich and those aristocrats got to amass their wealth through force.
