Should Cloned Animals Enter Our Food Supply
blueblood replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Im seeing GMO's as a hybrid of the original, and in my opinion i see soy milk as a hybrid of regular milk, I'm saying they should label if its not the original. I was using soy milk and regular milk as an example. I'm just saying stuff should be labeled so that people can exercise some choice. I grow GMO canola and my neighbour grows regular canola, I have an easier time spraying, he has an easier time exporting to Europe. -
Should Cloned Animals Enter Our Food Supply
blueblood replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Whose ass got bitten by GMO products? Please explain. A clone is the same. I can understand somebody being horrified at the practice and the technology. However, people who have a problem eating clones or genetically modified products should take a high school biology course. There is no reason to fear eating a clone any more than eating any other animal from the same factory farm. Well my ass got bit by GMO products, the EU has a big problem with Roundup Ready and Liberty Link canola. But now that biofuel is taking off, they are probably going to remove that ban, wooohooo!!! Your right about the last part of your post, but I think they should be labeled, You can look at it this way, I like my regular milk fresh off the cow, but they have Soy milk for vegetarians now, I'm sure them and me wouldn't like both of them being labeled as just milk. -

Why are the Conservatives Killing the Wheat Board?
blueblood replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I am a supporter of the CPC yet I don't approve of their decision about the wheat board along with my MP, who is a CPC member who is the only one who voted against it. The boys support the CPC on other issues than that. I'd be naive to think that the CPC took the stand on the CWB for that reason alone. It's either support a party that "despises" rural Canada and rural values or one that throws rural Canada somewhat of a bone, take your pick. I'll tell you right now the Liberals supporting the wheat board arent going to get farmer votes come next election, they need a little more than that to get their majority. -
Conservatives Announce $200 Bio-Fuels Progam
blueblood replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I wonder how this helps farmers, especially with low prices offered. It could be a boondoggle. Lots of money invested with little to show for it. $200 million could go a longer way to diversify farm economies. For example, there is a few things listed on the NFU site that could be funded with this cash. I like the biofuel thing because it diversifies the economy and takes pressure off of big oil and creates some competition for food exports, it should in theory raise prices a little. Plus it provides jobs for other people so there isn't much wrong with that. 4.3 billion went to farm payments, that's getting ridiculous, I mean that's a lot of money the taxpayers are shelling out that could be spent on something else. I don't agree with the government doing that, it's too little to help and too much strain on the taxpayers. They can run diesel powered electric generator on 100% canola oil biodiesel. the hard thing with biofuels is cracking the energy production cycle. Once the cycle is cracked then it pays for itself. -

blueblood replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The National Farmers Union doesn't think much about it at all. Of course they don't, it's not the magic bullet. It does help out the economy though by providing jobs and by buying some of our produce. The problem I see with it though is that they buy the low end products that are feed quality and low low quality canola. it won't raise prices by very much that's for sure. -

Oh God here we go. Why are they doing this?? And suprise suprise, they are promoting ethynol fuel in Saskatoon. Gee I wonder why. I don't like my tax dollars being spent on this. Also, here we begin with teh 'sky is falling': "It allows a civilization that is starting to have real fears about its future either in terms of energy availability and price on the one side or climate change on the other, to pretend for a least a while that they've got a solution. It's little more than a distraction." I really hope this issue doesn't dominate our next election. It depends on what the media wants though. They tried to do something similar in California and it got voted NO. The 200 mil. sounds more like an investment than anything, nothing wrong with that. -

Ok, Liberal voters can foot the bill. Then Conservative voters can pay the $5 billion for the Afghan war, and the $15 B for military equipment and all the rest. Whoah there, the Libs sent us there in the first place, and someone said that they were going to upgrade military equipment under the Martin gov't, but I forget who said that, shoot. -
The Achilles' Heel of the Federal Liberals

Just goes to show how powerful media and media spin is, (MTV anyone). They are at the point of scary, if the media would have spun the clean air act the way Harper wanted it, he might not be in this predicament. -
Canada could be hurt by Kyoto retreat
blueblood replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That's not fair, your assuming the person who's bike and solar power doesn't pollute, China does, where do their tonnes upon tonnes of CO2 come from, breathing? If your going to make a comparison at least use smart cars vs. an SUV even then. It's safe to say smart cars pollute less than a 6 litre Yukon. You have to realize that China has way more contributors than Canada. So lets put ratios in here, for example 30 smart cars to 8 SUVs (note not 30 to one i'm putting 8 in to offset our contribution, note again that these are arbitrary). Who's polluting more? I'm not saying that Canadians should clean up a little, they should do as much as they can. As should China. Bottom line the total needs to come down, ALL NEED TO DO THEIR PART. You also have to realize that China isn't 100% online yet, you can bet that when they do, they'll be up with us in per capita. Also, do you think that China would really go along with it if we dropped our emissions, no they'll be looking for another excuse, that's how they are. They are not entitled to pollute the world just because per capita they do it less, they're still polluting, clean it up simple. It's like the states, the biggest in both regards I think, they need to get to work too. -
Canada could be hurt by Kyoto retreat
blueblood replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
But the point is that we DO emit more. The average Canadian emits several times as much carbon dioxide as the average person from China. Until they reach the same per capita emissions as us, yes. It doesn't make much sense to measure emissions by country. If I were to start my own country, should I be allowed to emit as much carbon dioxide as Canada even though I'm only 1/30 millionth of the population? It doesn't make much sense to measure emissions per capita too then, If we only contribute lets say 5% of total CO2 emissions, and if we clean up all of our emissions, we still have 95% of the Earth polluted, does that make any sense? Bottom line, everyone cleans up, 100% of problem solved. What i'm saying is Global warming is not going to go away if just Canada and Europe cleans up. Pollution is one of those Global things. If you admit CO2, clean it up. China too. They're putting a lot of tonnes of CO2, they should clean it up like us. Why the double standard? -
Canada could be hurt by Kyoto retreat
blueblood replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
China will NOT clean up if Canada, which is far richer and far dirtier than China, doesn't. The Chinese will point to us and say that we pollute 7+ times as much as they do and we don't want to take any action, so why should they? If we take action and responsibility for our mess, China will have to get on board. But right now we give them the perfect excuse not to. I said we should do our part. I'm saying that even though we do in the long run it's a drop in the bucket, but it's still important that we do it as everyone else. -
Canada could be hurt by Kyoto retreat
blueblood replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
So, if someone lives in China, they should only be allowed to emit a small amount of carbon dioxide. But if somoene lives in Canada, they are entitled to emit much, much more carbon dioxide? Why the difference? That would be us (and by us I mean industrialized nations). I'm not saying we're entitled to pollute, thats crap, I'm saying that we don't in total pollute as much as others. Everyone should be cleaning this up. Is china exempt from cleaning up because they don't emit as much per capita even though they contribute a lot globally? -
Canada could be hurt by Kyoto retreat
blueblood replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yah but China has a billion people. It adds up. It's not the per capita that hurts the environment at the end of the day, but the total, and china has a high total. Don't get me wrong Canada should do our part, so should the other countries as it is a GLOBAL problem. If Canada cleans up and China doesn't, that won't make a dent in the GLOBAL warming thing. We'll still pay and have spent billions of dollars. Like it or not, the ones who contribute the most have to clean up in order to make it work or it's all a waste. -

Agreed, Internal Affairs needs to go through and gut the RCMP for this. A Dishonorable discharge, a fine, and it appearing on the permanent record, a public apology, and 365 days community service. Usually the RCMP is pretty good about punishing officers who mess up. The responsible officers shouldn't have a "black eye" because there are some bad eggs. -

The soldiers get workplace compensation and retirement just like any other government job and I don't think they put on a production like Mr. Arar. They aren't greedy with their compensation like Mr. Arar, I haven't seen a soldier go to court saying "I stepped on a mine, I'm intitled to millions of dollars" I don't think he is, that's the danger of his job, that's like saying i'm entitled to millions of dollars for grabbing a PTO shaft on Canadian soil, the gov't owes me millions, and I bet you wouldn't be wanting to foot the bill for that. They get their compensation which their work gives them and they are on their way, I don't have a problem with that. with the tainted blood thing, I hate to say this but I didn't give them tainted blood... I don't know if they went to court or not, but if the government offered them comp. then its all right and they should be first in line for health care, but they are not demanding millions of dollars apiece neither, if the Hep C victims pulled a Mr. Arar asking for all sorts of money I'd be mad for the same reason. It's unfortunate yes, but it's not the nation of Canada's fault. No amount of money is going to make Hep C and Aids go away, in my view all we owe them is front line in Health Care and if there is a cure they should be the first to get it and for free. I'll take my 20 cents from Mulrouney thank you very much. -

Last time I checked, Canada IS STILL a democracy. We ELECT our leaders, they run our government and our security services. In a democracy, it is ultimately the voter (citizen) who is responsible for what the government does. The RCMP may be at fault (which is run by Canadians coincidentally) but we also have collective responsibility for allowing such abuse to happen. I don't "stereotype" people as racist because I well know that if Arar were white Prairie farmer Smith, who ended up being detained by the US and sent overseas for torture because the Americans were falsely told by the RCMP that Smith was planning to blow up something in the US as he was pissed off at them screwing the Canadian cattle industry, you would be thoroughly outraged and it would have never occurred to you to complain about your dollar! Are our leaders puppets? Do they dance when we say dance? No they're people of their own as is the RCMP. RCMP got "punished" (in my view zaccardeli got off light with a big severance package and no dishonorable discharge) Saying the Canadian taxpayer is responsible for this is passing the buck. The Syrians are responsible, make them pay. If "Smith" were deported for torture, i'd be upset at the fact he'd be getting tortured (as I am with Arar) and i'd be upset that I'd have to pay his compensation. If he was planning to blow something up at the US for them screwing us with cattle i'd slap him in the head as everyone knows that's not how you go about fixing a problem like that. -

Just as easy to say when your not the one paying the entire bill, your only contributing a dollar, as am I. Personally I'd rather look like a hero and not a treasure hunter but thats me, to each his own. Did the Jews that suffered a lot worse (in my opinion) during the holocaust get 37 million apiece from the German government, by your logic they're entitled to it. If he believes he should sue someone, he should sue the Syrian gov't for 37 million dollars, they are the ones that did it after all, and the government of Canada for it's part in it be his attorney and use whatever means necessary to pull it off. The people of Canada had no part in this. Fine, let the Canadian government abuse its citizens because otherwise it may cost you a dollar. Jews didn't get $37 M each (that kind of money doesn't exist on this planet) but the German government has paid out $7 billion since 2000 in compensation. If Lieback got $2.7 M for a coffee burn, I figure that $37 M for almost a year of torture in prison isn't all that much. The gov't of Canada didn't abuse Mr. Arar, the Syrian gov't did, is it all right for them to get off the hook, but it's all our fault even though it was 1000's of miles away where he was abused. The RCMP has a blackeye from which it may never recover, but he's entitled to 37 million of our tax dollars. If he's entitled to dollars, it should be Syrian dollars, not ours. Harper should be at the UN blasting the Syrians over this, he blasted the Chinese about it, why not the Syrians? The natives at residential school were tortured too, do they get 37 million. No. What makes Mr. Arar so high and mighty that he should get all this money while other victims of torture don't? Torture is torture is it not? The double standard here is amazing. If Lieback gets 2.7 M for a coffee burn that judge should be disbarred immediately. It's that sort of greed is what the root of all our problems are. -

That would actually explain why a reasonable person might turn down a job in meat packing plant. They might have to offer higher wages to attract people. Heaven forbid a person not educated at a university get a decent wage! -

It's crap that the RCMP did that, they have a huge black eye and their comissioner got canned. Zaccardeli shouldn't have gotten severance pay, in fact it should have been a dishonorable discharge. That is all Canada should have done. I'm sorry i believe that suing people who didn't steal your money is the ultimate form of cowardice, greed, and selfishness. When a victim is making the taxpayers of Canada victim, that's where I have a problem with it. In all fairness the guy could have been a white guy from the next town over, and i'd still be mad at him for pulling that. Bravo to Arar for red flagging an injustice. I know you like to stereotype people that don't agree with you on these sort of things as racist, but it's not going to work. If your going to sue somebody sue the people who actually abused you. Why isn't Arar slamming the Syrian gov't over it's human rights abuses? Why isn't the Canadian gov't making Syria foot the bill? Punish the right people for the crime, the RCMP have been punished (somewhat) why not the torturers themselves? -

Pope John Paul II got shot and forgave the guy. It's not like we stole 37 million of his money, I don't think we can put a price on "torture", it's not like it's gonna erase the torture, what's done is done. To make the whole country pay for what happened to him is petty. -
Well it is private property, which was expropriated, I don't know if those guys got compo for it or not hopefully they did. Those families have had a title deed so the land was legally theirs, the municipality from what I understand has no special claim to it. If the land is going to be "sold" back, then the municipality can get in line and cough up like the farmers. This is funny though as 11,000 acres split up between 125 families only results in about 88 acres between them, (I hope they're growing vegetables, or expanding their dairy industry). 11,000 acres is A LOT of land to stick an airport on, but for farmng it's the size of 1 big grain farm. The only way this would help out at voting time is the idea behind it.
