  1. At any rate, audience interest will wane. We're now down to only one "look how many damn children I have!" programs, and I imagine the Decadent Feuding Housewives franchise has reached the point of diminishing returns, too, economically speaking.
  2. Yes, that's indeed the case. When force is needed to detain someone, it gets rough. But (and I understand you're not disputing the unsavoury facts) we're talking specifically of totally unwarranted behaviours--coupled with coverups, not incidentally--and Kimmy and I were both referring, in fact, to the type of situation where we say, "Well, the police have a side to this story as well"...until the information comes out, and comes out, and comes out. Until we can't justify it anymore. A couple of incidents were specifically named...incidents where the authorities are criminally violent ...and then protected.
  3. No, it isn't. Some people might argue that Canada's gun laws are too stringent. I don't know about that. But I do feel that they're not too weak, which appears to be more of a (small 'l') liberal stance than a conservative one. And it could well be that liberals are more boneheaded on this subject than conservatives are. (You appreciate that I don't make such suggestions lightly! )
  4. holy moly, timG, you're the one who brought up the personal. And my remark was itself an observation. I simply don't think that many debates about economics are fundamentally about this or that poster's "jealousy."
  5. We've all been there. (Well...except for those who would rather be punched in the face than ever admit to their own occasional silliness on forums like this one.) Just so. Obviously there are plenty of excellent police officers. But now that I view the problems as actually institutional, I find it pretty distressing at times. I have little doubt that lots of individual officers would agree.
  6. Ah. Well, you're mistaken. Glad to clear that up!
  7. No...and every time someone brings up "jealousy" in a debate about economics, the actual issue is lazy debating.
  8. Yes, that's true. And to briefly deviate from the subject...would someone please inform the Harper Government of this interesting and quite positive fact?
  9. I hear you. Even my wife, who would defend the police to a fault in nearly every incident, has lately become disillusioned and sickened, and now is practically spitting at them. There appears to be some sort of culture of extreme entitlement among what has long been a cherished Canadian institution. And the defenders of the Faith are lately becoming more plaintive and tepid in their apologetics (that's my impression, anyway).
  10. While most of us are occasionally guilty of thread hijacking (usually not really intentionally), there are a few who do it regularly (and I'm certainly not talking about Waldo here); and, almost without exception, on essentially the same subject. Lots of youtube videos to support their "point" (the point being to masturbate, while simultaneously hijacking threads). Ah well, whatever floats their geekdom boats.
  11. I doubt very much you're a bad person, but I don't think i quite understand your point. On the other hand, murderous atrocities are (globally, anyway) a continual occurrence, and we can't always be slumped in sorrow.
  12. I personally do support raising taxes (and yes, that would automatically apply to me personally...I say this to avoid the "other people's money" retorts that are so inevitable, and so lazy).
  13. Not of "the socialist"; of "poster socialist."
  14. Christ, yes, these people take movies way too seriously. The vigilante hero theme sounds pretty deadly when you think on it rationally.
  15. Did you get your conspiracy theorizing from Glenn Beck? I know you don't think much of parasites like scientists, and agree that their job should be to agree with the Prime Minister. Unfortunately for you, not everybody agrees. Presumably due to Marxist indoctrination.
  16. So now you're asserting that they're...wasting valuable time, which they could be applying to research? So...you retract your comments elsewhere about your leisure activities, biking and whatnot? You could be researching, bonam....instead of "distastefully" doing something else.
  17. Thank you! Couldn't have said it better myself.
  18. And for that matter, does anyone suppose they would have a difficult time sussing out kraychik's opinions on any number of so-called "left/right" issues?
  19. The great English/Polish writer Joseph Conrad (who learned English at 21, French a little later) made exactly the same point. He said French is more precise, and is arguably easier to learn.
  20. Please. I live in a (actually, the) truly bilingual region, and the Francophones simply do not behave this way. I've known them, worked with them (married them, even! )all my life. I don't know how this Anglo predisposition for viewing the French as a bunch of entitled jerks came from; in my experience, it's flatly untrue.
  21. Hmmm. Perhaps these massive labour protests in Eastern Canada are getting National Press coverage...but the local press must be ignoring it. Got any links? I'm curious how I could have missed it. I have no idea what you're on about here. And massive numbers of Easterners do go West for work. I mean, you couldn't find a single NBer who doesn't personally know a bunch of folks who have gone West for work. So...what are you talking about, again?
  22. You're talking to a poster who cites killer Breivik as a wise fellow......
