  1. One more time, the quote in question: I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous (global warming) is... The dictionary has this to say of the word over-representation - Represented in excessive or disproportionately large numbers. So for those having trouble with the English language, this means (in context) that Gore feels the factual information should be presented many times. Hardly nuance, just plain english. Sheesh. Waste of time pointing out the obvious to Monty. He has his BS talking point and nothing will move him off it. No interest in truth or reality there, just dishonest talking points. Sit back and laugh, that is all can be done with it.
  2. No, the government is not accountable to anyone if they are not required to answer questions. give your head a shake man.
  3. Monty Burns: It is OK to lie about what Al Gore said. Its a nice try Monty, gotta give you credit. Anyone who understands the English language does not get the same interpretation as you though. If something is "over represented" it does not translate that it is being lied about.
  4. You naively (or perhaps willfully) think the media is a simple unit motivated to a single purpose. It is astounding to me that you would forgo all responsibility of reporting to your government. Obviously there is bad reporting in the media, just like there are bad actions in government. Both should be on display for all to judge. Under Harpers vision his government gets removed from display, except for what he wants to show you. Do you seriously think he will show you the warts? Harper supporters should be writing letters and phoning and doing whatever else they can to get their leader to stop picking fights with the press....if you care about your PM that is.
  5. Pure nonsense. Debate the issue at hand, stop throwing dry mud.
  6. Actually no...it was that Amir Taheri (sp) reporter who gave the story to the NP. The Wiesenthal centre was who the NP ran to for confirmation. They confirmed it. What's interesting to see now is rightwing pundits (Michael Coren) making the accusation that the concept of tagging religious minorities was debated in the Iranian Parliament....so to him the story was partiailly correct. Problem with that is I see the Jewish MP and news organizations telling me that the matter was never even discussed. Coren even claims that the new law enforces a dress code. It does not. So, the lie lives on in different forms. I don't believe the Iranians were ever considering it. They've been demonized to the point that people are ready to believe anything. I agree with the Jewish MP, it's an insult to Irans religious minorities to have floated this story.
  7. Show me a poll that says Canadians think the Prime Minister shouldn't have to answer questions to the media. Show me a poll which says Canadians think the Prime Minister MUST answer questions and cannot decide who gets to ask them. I don't think that would be a very hard poll to produce, actually. It's called being accountable, and if you think Canadians don't think their PM needs to practice it you're kidding yourself.
  8. The US (and Israel) announced that they were immune to 'war crimes' prosecution. However, internal discipline may use that, or possibly other, verbiage. Kind of a moot point, dontcha think? If you think there's something to be gained here by debating a term used in a media sub-title then go for it. And your points about "alternate measures" being needed against guerillas and cynical comment about "innocent noncombatants" don't belong in this topic. This was a massacre of innocents.
  9. http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle...ticle620720.ece This is a hard truth to face, but Murtha threw it at us in the middle of May after he was briefed on the investigation: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/3871378.html What Murtha has been saying about the troops being strained and extended is proving true and the reality is bearing a bitter fruit. I hope they don't seek the death penalty, that's all I can say.
  10. What a load of tripe. It seems like sarcasm is all rightwingers have left. Even in the face of the atrocity being revealed, joking and sarcasm.
  11. Show me a poll that says Canadians think the Prime Minister shouldn't have to answer questions to the media. 'nuf said. Harper is not doing what you describe, he's being immature and putulant and I think you realize that. He's got supporters who will never critisize him no matter what he does, and that's fine. Even they know the reality here.
  12. That is certainly strange. I was ready to call this a simple case of overzealous reporting but now the source is citing the paper as it's source? The chicken before the egg before the chicken? I'm sure there is a logical explanation but, can't figure out what it is. And the apology by the NP says it received confirmation from the dean AND the associate dean of the SWC. The SWC says they never confirmed the badge story. Agree with you, VERY strange stuff.
  13. Have you been following the story as it's unfolded? Are you aware of the accusations by Congressman Murtha? Are you aware that it's pretty much established now that these soldiers committed murder as an act of revenge? Sure, sh#t happens. And when it happens, it's our duty to scream it from the roof-tops so the next squad that's reaching the edge might remember this and the fallout and step away from that edge. Don't look at everything as either "pro-war" or "anti-war". Sometimes morality needs to win the day.
  14. Oh yeah, I'm out to get the Jews. Dare I ask how I'm turning this into a "Jewish conspiracy"? I think it's bizarre that the National Post would reach out to the SWC - an American Jewish organization - for confirmation of details on a new Iranian law. Don't you? I also think it's on public record that the National Post is owned by the Asper brothers and that the Aspers are on record for saying they will never be critical of Israel. A "conspiracy" is something secret. CanWest Global and it's flagship paper the National Post are openly Israel-centric. Nothing wrong with that, so long as it doesn't cloud your judgement. In this case it obviously did.
  15. Oh sure, Johah Goldberg. He's a real bright boy! {puke} Anyone who buys the bullsh$t that Harper is being treated with media bias has a pretty short memory. The liberals were roasted by the media down the home stretch of the last election. Harper should thank the media for electing him, period. And most Conservatives - who lay claim to values of transparancy and accountability - are not happy about this. It makes Harper look weak besides going against those central values. He needs to back-peddle on this one. His assurtion that regional media will be soft on him is naive. He's waved a red flag in front of their faces! What's next, lock out ALL media? If you've been following this it's clear that it's about more than just who gets to ask the questions. Harper has been treating the media with contempt on a variety of issues. For example, the new accountability act was given to reporters just minutes before the press conference. How are they supposed to ask relavent informed questions if they don't have time to look at the information before the press conference? It's a pattern of small acts showing disrespect to the media, and by extension all Canadians who depend on media to keep them informed of what the government is up to.
  16. For some reason pictures don't work for me at this place anymore, and yes I use the tags. Check out the picture here Not looking quite as contrite and sincere as he was trying to sound a moment earlier. Does anyone think that wasn't a calculated cynical move?
  17. So then, why did the National Post ask them? Strange. The National Post cites the Simon Wiesenthal Center as a confirmation for the false story, yet this organization is asking the UN to confirm the story. The National Post recently apologized for this story, calling it an "error". They identified the Simon Wiesenthal Center and two Iranian expatriates living in Canada as being the only confirmation they secured before going to print.
  18. So, this thread can only amount to providing a place for you to rant hysterically about how one story proves the NP is the worst paper in the history of the universe and it's continued existence is an insufferable humiliation to Canada. Is that what you're saying? First, where did I "rant hysterically"? What rightwing nitwittery. Second, this topic provides a wide range of discusion. No need to change the subject. I realize some aren't happy to see an Israeli-centric MSM outlet take a hit. Unfortunately when media adopts a national interest then they become vulnerable to this kind of breakdown.
  19. Interesting to watch people try and change the subject. The apology by the National Post and an appearance by (not sure who) their representative on CBC last night was even more revealing about them. They apologized, yes. But not without blaming everyone else they could think of. On the CBC last night the Post rep made a desperate plea for people not to judge them as biased. Unprovoked.
  20. So, the guy who wrote the false article stands by it....and that means he retains some credibility? What a pathetic joke. It's over. If you want to bang a war drum do it with truth, not lies. http://www.sptimes.com/2006/05/23/Opinion/...Iran_stor.shtml
  21. I think there's a third group. Those who can't be bothered to get educated enough to realize the story has been wholly and completely discredited. Here, check out the wiki entry on it. Look at the references & external links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Iranian_...law_controversy Anyone still prattling on about how this may still prove true is a dishonest warmonger, plain and simple.
  22. Iran has not denied....what? Note that Amir blames others for turning his "opinion" into "news". What an idjit.
  23. It appears the National Post never told him they'd use his article as the basis for a front page news story, if I read him correctly. He says "my column was used as the basis for a number of reports that somehow jumped the gun." He also didn't mean for it to be a "news story", only an "opinion column". It was just his opinion that a law had been passed requiring Jews to wear yellow arm bands, huh? This man is beyond belief. I wouldn't have believed his credibility could get any lower, but it just did. http://www.benadorassociates.com/article/19508
  24. What absolute nitwittery. A mainstream media source makes a false claim about a nation passing a law, and you think that's akin to the CBC showing a movie? I don't even know where to begin with that. I don't think I even need to respond, it defeats itself.
  25. You either don't have the brains to understand the significance of this event or you have an axe to grind. Which is it?
