Hey moron. How the hell do you know what is going on in GITMO or any US military prison for that matter? Have you ever been there? No, you are just talking out your *ss about things you have absolutely no idea about. No right minded American is happy with what happened at Abu Ghraib BUT, to say that it is common place is an outright crock of shit! -

Cindy Sheehan: Endorsing Chavez?
America1 replied to tml12's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
The problem is a political establishment that brooks no dissent, regardless of what side of the political spectrum its coming from. As Bush has taken to saying lately, the administration welcomes dissent so long as it agrees with his position. Charges dropped against Sheehan; Capitol Police apologize You have no idea what your talking about. There were protest outside, nobody had an issue with the them. It is Senate rule that they don't allow protesters on the Senate floor. A guy was booted when Clinton was in office for the the very same thing (wearing a t-shirt with a message on it). And please give me 1 example of bushing saying "his administration welcomes dissent so long as it agrees with his position". -
Ginsburg isn't awful, just not really worth celebrating or detracting. funny how only the conservatives are awful.

Harper brushes off U.S. criticism of Arctic plan
America1 replied to Shady's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Does anyone really think this is anything more than Harper just playing tough against the US to show the liberals that he won't be a lap dog? -
If you only see blame from the Repubs what do you see from the Dems? What have they put forth in the last 6 yrs?
-
Interesting you didn't mention Ruth Bater Ginsburg.

I will give two: 1. Nixon's southern strategy capitalizing on the Voting Rights Act passed by LBJ 2. Reagan kicked off his 1980 presidential run in Philadelphia, Mississippi, a town highly symbolic to racist southern whites due to its connection to the 1964 deaths of three civil rights workers at the hands of the KKK. Reagan's speech launching his campaign centered on his support for "state's rights", code word to southern bigots in that was the same position held by slave owners prior to the Civil War. Later in his campaign, Reagan spoke before an Atlanta audience claiming Jefferson Davis, president of the confederacy, as one of his all time heros. Your examples are over 25 years old. Can you come up with anything relavant today. I gave examples for the Dems in the past week.

How did most Americans respond to that "chocolate" comment America1? I mean, it could be racist but coming from Nagin it just sounded bizarre... They thought it was a retarded thing to say with underpinning racist connotations. If a white politician said "we are going to make San Diego white again". He/She would have been chased out of office. See, what I mean on the Dem racial double standard.

Give an example of republicans race baiting. The Rush Limbaugh show provides almost daily examples, particularly re: Carol Moseley-Braun, Jesse Jackson, etc. In terms of politicians, the Trent Lott fiasco comes to mind. 1.) I listen to Rush and I don't recall any isntances of him "race-baiting". Making fun of Jesse jackson is not race-baiting. The man mankes an ass out of himself and Rush simply makes fun or him for doing it. 2.) Trent lott wasn't pitting the race against each other as a tatic, as the dems do in every election and on most social issues (Mayor Nagin's "chocolate city" & Hillary's "planation" comments were just examples from last week). He was just made a racist comment. Not nearly as bad as say bieng the leader of the KKK as Senator Byrd.

US Trade Rep Might Challenge Canada's Media Laws
America1 replied to YankAbroad's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Admit it, Canada is no longer competitive in certain areas of forest products because of lower demand especially for newsprint, plywood and veneer. If we are not competitive, the tarrif would've killed us off. As it is, our forest companies became more efficient. How else can you explain large new pulpmills opening up in the Norther Interior? Also, do you know what a stumpage fee is? It is a fee, paid by the company felling the tree, for the privilege of taking the tree. Along with the stumpage fee, a forest company must also take care of the environment on the woodlot, making sure no streams are damaged etc, clean up the area, and replant it. All expensive endeavors, btw. The forest co. owner in the states who owns the land can do whatever they want with it with no consequence whatsoever. We have a regulatory commission just as Canada does, don't kid yourself. Plus, much of our lumber (60% I believe) comes from tree farms in the south where the have very regimented processes of harvesting. -
US Trade Rep Might Challenge Canada's Media Laws
America1 replied to YankAbroad's topic in Canada / United States Relations
What was your point of asking the question? To imply that the US tariffs were justified by a bogus ruling by the WTO? I asked the question to prove a point. This issue isn't as 'black and white' as you make it seem, all I hear from you is "The US is a big meanie to us the nice and fair Canadians". This is a cloudy issue with both sides feeling they are being screwed (and are probably are at certain points). Funny how the U.N. and world organizations are always right when the US is being chastised but its a "bogus ruling" when it doesn't go your way. -
US Trade Rep Might Challenge Canada's Media Laws
America1 replied to YankAbroad's topic in Canada / United States Relations
The US went to the WTO and asked if it is theoretically possible for a stumpage based system to provide a subsidy. The WTO ruled that it is theoretically possible. However, the NAFTA panel actually looked at the facts and calculated all of the costs of Canadian regulations and concluded that there is no net subsidy. In other words, the WTO ruling did not contradict the NAFTA ruling because it was ruling on a different and largely irrelevant question. You could have saved everyone time and said YES, instead of babling like a fool as you did. -
Bush/Cheney placed under House Arrest
America1 replied to chrisparker's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Well, "Chris Parker", your day is going to suck. You have revealed your presence to the wrong person. I am Kimmitaru, and I serve the lords of the Dark Zone. Rest assured that my agents are even now attempting to ascertain your location, and will find you soon. When they do, no power-crystal ever assembled on earth will be strong enough to protect you from the flood of dark orgone energy that will engulf you. NESARA is doomed. Bush, Cheney, and Rove will be freed shortly, when the charade is revealed. The Galactic Federation has walked into a trap that my masters have laid for our enemies, including you. You have been tricked into revealing yourself too soon, and you have sealed your fate. The Star Angels cannot save you. We have a surprise planned for them as well. I won't spoil the surprise, except that they will find themselves trapped in the 7th dimension for 3 eons of pain and suffering. Run, "Chris Parker." Make this entertaining for me. Run to your allies for help, and tell them what is coming for you. And for them. -kimmitaru {Dark Zone Lieutenant of Earth Occupation Forces.} hahaha - funny stuff Kimmy. -
US Trade Rep Might Challenge Canada's Media Laws
America1 replied to YankAbroad's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Gets your facts right. The stumpage rates charged by the BC gov't do not represent a subsidy because they come with all kinds of regulatory strings attached that increase costs for Canadian producers. For example, in the US the US gov't builds the roads that the logging companies use to cut lumber. In Canada the Canadian companies must pay those costs. That is why the NAFTA panel ruled in Canada's favour. This the idea that Canadian lumber is subsisized is a myth created by US producers that want to line their pockets with extra cash at the expense of the American consumer. Didn't the WTO rule in favor of the US? -
Except that, if you accept that Chappaquiddick automatically disqualifies Ted Kennedy from public life or a political opinion ever again, you must also accept the same for Laura Bush. Something tells me, however, that you don't. except Laura Bush never ran or won a political office.

He pledged in his prior career not to rule on cases involving Vanguard (since he owned a significant share of their mutual funds). He then violated this sworn commitment later, and made rulings which had potentially direct impact on his own personal wealth. That's a failed character test, sorry. Readers who want to know more about this issue can read this Guardian article, which is hardly biased in Alito's favour. Please note that Alito's "sworn committment" was made on a Senate questionaire and not as a part of his judicial oath. Please also note that Alito's financial holdings were not directly affected by this ruling, and that Alito ruled correctly in the case. His ruling was vacated and a new panel hearing the case arrived at the same conclusion. In adition to all this, he asked the court to retry the case.

Please explain how Alito fails the "Character test".

Liberal Activist Judges Strike Again
America1 replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Insanity should not be mistakenly labled "Liberal Activism". Cases like this are why we have 1) Appeal Courts and 2) Judiciary Review Panels. FTA The case has nothing to do with Insanity. The wacko judge just feels punishment doesn't work. He is dead wrong on the issue and it seems he will be removed from the bench.
