Tougher punishment for career criminals
Signals.Cpl replied to Signals.Cpl's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Life in prison without the possibility of parole. Thats what I initially said and Canada does not have that distinction, only way to have a life sentence is if you daclear the offender I think it was dangerous offender or something. And you still leave it at the hands of parole board or whatever its called. -

I want the punishment that fits the crime. If you kidnap, rape and kill a little child then you get a punishment accordingly, meaning never see the light of day as a free person. You embezzle money, you are punished accordingly, punishment should fit the crime. If someone is sentenced to life in prison then they should die in that prison when their life ends. We need to look out for the people of Canada, if this guy as an example was given a one year sentence because someone believes it was an "accident" would he do it again? Seeing as he has committed at least 193 crimes that we know of and has been involved in 6 high speed chases then we could safely assume that he is a danger to society. We need to lock up people who show that they are unable or unwilling to change rather then give them nearly unlimited supply of chances. -

I don't care if they are under supervision for the rest of eternity. Life IN prison means life inside of the walls of a prison, not life in prison for 25 years and we will make you check in every week. -
So bursting in to a school and terrorizing the staff and students is a protest? In what world would that be a legitimate protest? When there is a law that takes effect and most people knowingly and willingly break that law as a tool of protest then that protest becomes illegal. Just because I don't agree with a law does not mean that I am exempt from following that law.

I would assault some idiot trying to kill me too wouldn't you? Molotov cocktails are deadly force, police would be well within their rights to open fire on those individuals. And yes, when a group of individuals begin to use terror wether it is terrorizing students who are not protesting, placing bombs on the subway(regardless of wether its a IED or it is a smoke bomb) and use molotov cocktails, they are making the protest illegal.

I dont agree with that point either, my issue is the devaluation of the Greek Education system and the fact that people spend the price of the college education on tutors while in Canada we generally spend it on the tuition. When you make it free, the guys with more money use that money get an edge, thus you end up spending money just to keep up.

Ok so in your argument is that 100% of all those who are handed a life in prison sentence die in prison because it means life? Is that what you mean? Because I sure would LOVE to see those statistics. -

Irrelevant, there is the possibility therefore it is not a life sentence. This is reserved for few people, you think this career criminal will be dubbed a dangerous offender? Doubt that, he will be 53 when he is up for parole, and if he plays his cards right then he will be right out for another crack at us. -

Life sentence means you die in prison, anything else, e.g. possibility of parole is NOT I say again NOT a life sentence in anything but name. Not only is class dismissed, but the semester is over... -

Seeing as Clifford Olson was given the possibility of parole I don't see where you can go. -

At some point it stops being punishment, and it starts being prevention. I don't want this guy punished, I want him off the streets so that next time its not me or my family or friends in the car he destroys. He has shown that he is not and cannot be a productive member of society, how many chances does a POS like this have? 2 or 3 or 40? This guy's life has been nothing but a long crime spree. -

US plans for war with Iran are ready
Signals.Cpl replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
It was obvious that the US was going to win, there are few nations on earth who have the resources to stand up to the US in direct combat, what the lack of soldiers did was prevent proper occupation and protection of the country. And then they dismantled the Iraqi Army which was a major mistake although its with the usual 20/20 hindsight. -

Such as? A life sentence for murder which does not mean life? I mean This sure comes to mind when I think justice, makes me feel all warm and cuddly knowing this guy is behind bars for life: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2012/03/19/graham-james-sentence.html Or the many other proper sentences handed out. -

He has led an unproductive life(at least from society's point of view) of crime, which ended a young women's life. The judge threw the book at him and it didn't seem much like justice. This is one of many examples as to why we need a complete overhaul of our justice system. -
Where and when did he say that?

End what would protesting accomplish? The mess is here, find a way to fix it or get out of the way so someone else can do it. Its simple, I don't see how a financial mess could be solved through protests that cause more financial problems.
-
Protestors are using molotov cocktails.
-
IF the majority of people feel that their rights are being trampled on by the protestors and they want the government to protect them, that is democracy. The protests are undemocratic because they try to force other people to support them or at the very least scare them in to silence. When the so-called protestors enter a school and scare the professors and students alike, disturb the daily lives of tens if not hundreds of thousands of people to get their message across that undemocratic, especially when we consider that they the minority is trying to force the majority to support them or at the very least to shut up with complaints.

Again, the point was that the article had nothing to do with the economy of greece, it was focusing on the costs to the student when the education is "free". Setting national finances aside, the point of the argument is that a free education is not free, it just forces you to spend similar amounts of money in other places in order to achieve the same goal. Its like getting a $1,000 computer for free, and having to spend $950 on the operating system there is very little net effect, and when looking on a bigger scale the actual costs could be larger on the student.
