The US sold many arms to Iraq, just not directly to either country. The CIA used an indirect approach, selling mainly to warlords, with the understanding the arms would make their way to Iraq and Iran.

Energy prices had skyrocketed throughout the 70s, leading to the recession of the early 1980s. There is nothing Carter could have done to prevent this, but he certainly tried, getting Israel and Egypt to sign a piece deal in 1979.

The North American recessions were in 1973-74 (Nixon), after the Yom Kippur War, and 1982-83 (Reagan), not 1977-81. In addition, the worst recession since the Great Depression, was 2008-09. He never betrayed the UK. Carter was not responsible for Iran overthrowing the Shah, no more than America is not responsible for the current turmoil in South Korea. However it's interesting you bring up Iran. In late 1979, the Iranians stormed the US Embassy, and took dozens of American hostages, and paraded them with blindfolds in the street Did you know that Carter had arranged a deal to free the hostages in the spring of 1980. However, George Bush Sr. cut a deal with Iran, which delayed the release of the hostages, until AFTER Reagan got into office. So essentially, the hostages had to spend 10 extra months in captivity, due to the fact that it would hurt Carter politically. Again you blame Carter, for things he had no control over (Afghanistan). Ironically, it was his boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Russia that actually hurt his approval ratings. It should be noted than the USA has been propping up dictatorships in Latin America for centuries. The collapse of the Soviet Union had nothing to do with Reagan, and everything to do with the fact that Russia was essentially broke, and the people would have eventually overthrew the government, like they did in many Eastern European nations.

The narrative that only two groups of people exist- left and right, is inaccurate. Most people are moderates by nature. If you know your history, driving people into two extreme factions, can have disastrous consequences (i.e. Germany 1930's Nazis vs Communists).. What is ironic, is the far left and far right are closer to each other ideologically, than people are to the centre. It was just announced that former President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100. Carter only served 4 years as President, but was a great man, who gave a lot to the community. I remember him from back in 1993, when he came to Winnipeg, to help build homes for Habitat For Humanity.

The big game this week will be the Vikings-Packers contest in Minneapolis. It's not a massive deal if the Vikings lose (they can still win the Conference next week with a win in Detroit). Green Bay will wrap up the #6 seed if they win.
