Canada has a limited set of options for escalating tit for tat with China. The world needs China more than they need Canada, we ain't going to win a trade war with them, if the world is given an ultimatum, Canada or China? They are choosing China, no contest. You are only analyzing one side of the coin through a confirmation bias filter, you want Canada to have the high ground on this, but they don't, wishful thinking.

Trump isn't rejecting compromise, he's willing to take less than $5 billion, the Democrats so far won't even give him a penny. As time goes on those polls will shift, people will blame the Democrats soon enough. Trump would be a fool to cave, if he caves now, the Democrats will never give him a penny for the wall.

The longer the shutdown goes on, the more the Democrats get the blame instead of Trump, it is their sacred cows on the chopping block after all, if they don't cave. The Democrats spend $5 billion or more on complete nonsense all the time, the American people aren't going to take lightly to losing their gibs the Dems claim to love so much, just so the Democrats can play chicken with Donald Trump, especially when Trump is willing to negotiate and Democrats clearly aren't.

The Democrats have no bench and they have no strategy to run against Trump other than "Obstruct Trump". As long as that remains the case, and I don't see signs of either variable changing before 2020, the Democrats are screwed.

Oh but it will do some good, them blaming Trump for all of the problems that plague humanity, is counter-productive and drives people away from the Democrats, because they cry wolf on Trump so damn often. It doesn't do their causes any good, that is true, but it sure helps far more important causes that they are opposed to and that I happen to support, so I say, keep it up haters, you're a bigger help to Trump than his actual supporters.

The Liberals hated NAFTA because the Conservatives were in power and they were for it, once they were out of power and the Liberals would get the credit for passing it instead of the Conservatives, then all of a sudden, they were all for it. Then later, when Trump comes along and wants a new trade deal, they love NAFTA more than ever because it can used to virtue signal against the Orange Man, and if Canadians turn out to like the USMCA after it's implemented, they will claim it's only so good because they played "hardball" with Trump.

It's because the CBC propaganda arm told them "Orange Man Bad", instead of telling them the truth, that's he's the Secret President of Canada, and is looking out more for Canadian interests than Trudeau ever will. Many Canadians have a tendency to think that every Republican President is basically the next Hitler anyway, and the CBC is more than happy to indulge that fantasy and promote it until the cows come home. They pulled the same shit with Bush 43 too, it's nothing new. So pay them no mind, other than to be amused by their counter-productive screeching.

I wish Canada dropped the ridiculous Supply Management Tariffs we have against your dairy, beef and poultry, those tariffs are hurting Canadian consumers a lot more than we are harming American farmers, or propping up those industries sheltered from competition via said ridiculous tariffs. I've been observing a little, and knee-jerk anti-American sentiment is pretty much what I expected on a Canadian politics forum anyway, but Republicans get it extra bad, like clubby on the DCF, only on steroids because Canader. Indeed, the Liberal Party of Canada and it's CBC propaganda arm may try to downplay Canada being inexorably tied to the British Crown, in favor of emphasizing it's role as a Post-National State, but that doesn't actually erase history, not that this stops them from trying, and indoctrinating many Canadians to not even know their own history.
