We have a history of racism in our immigration history. I don't know how many had jobs or owned homes, but applying for permanent residency status would likely be difficult because, they are in the country as asylum seekers and the DHS considers Haiti to be a safe country, and of course there is the current political situation which wants to build walls and deport anybody who is not white it seems.
