Will the BC Conservatives rise to power?
Newfoundlander replied to Vancouverite's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
The Conservatives would do better if they had a sensible leader. BC should have never gotten rid of Gordon Campbell, some people don't realize how good they got it. -

According to Angus Reid Kathy Dunderdale remains the second most popular premier in the country, after Brad Wall. Her approval rating is 58%, which is the highest approval Angus Reid has had her at in their three polls since February. http://www.angus-reid.com/polls/44016/wall-dunderdale-and-selinger-are-best-rated-canadian-premiers/ In a matter of minutes Corporate Research will be releasing results from their quarterly poll they conducted over August. -

Newfoundland and Labrador General Election

http://nl.ndp.ca/nr090111SmallBusinessPlank A pretty safe and obvious platform plank from the NDP. I was expecting more when I heard they were holding a news conference to announce part of their small business platform. I figured they at least would have planned to make this a series of cuts but they said if they form government they will cut the tax from 4% to 3% in their first year. Personally I think they should have said that they would raise the minimum wage by X amount each time they cut the small business tax, till the tax was eliminated. In Manitoba the NDP eliminated the small business tax. -
The NDP have been around 50 years and the Liberals had no problem forming the government during the majority of that time. The Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance were one party that separated for a decade and then got back together, a different situation then the Liberals and NDP. As well I do think the NDP has the potential of becoming a Quebec Party. It's not easy representing Quebeckers and the rest of Canada, just ask Liberals and Mulroney. If the Liberals would go back to being a more centrist party they would have the opportunity over the next few years to take support away from both the NDP and CPC.

They may, or they may leave politics.

I'm not sure of all their views but I've read elsewhere that the most of the Liberals who are now left within caucus are more centrist, business friendly, blue grits. While she's not an MP anymore Martha Hall Findlay has said she would not be a member of the "Liberal Democrats".

What will happen in the Toronto-Danforth by-election?
-
That is incorrect, We've had several non-Canadian born Prime Ministers and several non-Canadian born Official Opposition leader. I believe John Turner was the most recent Prime minister and Opposition leader not to be born in Canada. As well do you really think that Olivia Chow is organizing a campaign to replace her husband?
-
Olivia Chow's name being brought up wouldn't be that ridiculous if it were being brought up for other reasons than her being Jack Layton's widow. I would find it very odd if Chow, or anyone really, would even consider wanting to be leader of the party their spouse led just months after their death.
-
There is no other "Jack Layton", trying to persuade people to vote NDP because you're the party of Jack Layton won't work. The party needs to try and focus on Layton's policies, and not just on the man himself. I've seen comments whereby people have said they should choose Paul Dewar because they can make him seem the most like Jack, or they can choose this person because him and Jack shared these qualities, etc. etc. The Liberals thought they had the second coming of Pierre Trudeau in Michael Ignatieff and look what happened. The NDP cannot create Jack Layton 2.0.
-
Ian Capstick has said he doesn't believe Mulcair or Daviees should run for the leadership because they already have important roles. Davies wouldn't stand a chance anyways but it would be a major shock if Mulcair didn't run. The party needs to try and separate themselves from Layton, to an extent, moving forward. Trying to find the next Layton or having a leader that tries to be like Layton won't work. It will be like the Liberals trying to find their next Truduea, and look how that has turned out. People shouldn't just vote for the NDP because they think Layton was a nice man, or any party just because they think the leader is nice.

Newfoundland and Labrador General Election

Olympic gold medalist Mark Nichols lost his bid to represent the PCs last night. In a three person race he placed third and Nick McGrath will now represent the party in Labrador West. This will be one the races to watch on election night, The NDP have always done well here and has represented the district before. -
New Democratic Parties Across Canada
Newfoundlander replied to Newfoundlander's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Punked do you really think a doctor or an engineer that could make upwards of $200,000 is not influenced by the fact that their tax rates in Nova Scotia are over double what they are in Alberta? -

I used a published report that supposedly had incorrect data, how do I know your one report is correct?
