I did that once, and invited people to come up with "cultural" reasons why so many Europeans were pedophiles. Argus' response was that "its to be ecpected because some people are just pedophiles", so no big deal apparently. None of you racist/Islamophobic types disagreed with him. Clearly, you folks are only concerned if kids are exploited by brown people. Anyway, you can do your own research - that way, you won't have to deal with any inconvenient information about just how barbaric white folks can be.

I knew a woman once whose marriage had been arranged (not a Muslim woman, btw); they had met once before marrying. She said it was hard at first, but that over time they grew to love one another, and now she is very happy. At the time I spoke with her, they'd been married upwards of 40 years. A neighbor, in her late 80s, recently told of meeting her husband. The first time they met - at her door when he'd come to pick her up for a date at the encouragement of a mutual friend - they "knew". They were engaged a week later, and married shortly after that; they've been together and in love 60+ years. Getting to know someone/having sex before marriage is not a guarantee of happiness. Contact restrictions prior to marriage are not a guarantee of misery. I don't think there is any way of ensuring a "suitable partner", regardless of whether I'm looking on my own behalf or relying on family to find someone for me.

If course you were referring to me, how many other people here have you called shrews or shrewish? How dishonest of you to try denial here. Anyway, being called a shrew by you is fine by me - demonstrates that you feel the truth of what I say, but don't want to admit to it. My "attitude" is irrelevant in your desperate attempt to convince yourself that I'm wrong - kinda like the misogynists in Mosques, Temples and boardrooms the world over who call women "bitches" when they are making too much sense contrary to some man's treasured belief.

I think you've nailed it, Rue. I'm sure the current rage for Marvel comics superheroes movies will result in a bumper crop of gays in a few years. Personally, I'm debating transitioning to a Zen-Whoberis because Gamora's beautiful green skin just does it for me.
-
I check girls out too. Does that mean I'm gay, but pretending to be straight?
-
Thanks Rue. I don't always agree with you, but in no way do I think you have ever defamed all Muslims. Challenging Islamic extremism is required, and I'm sure it can be done without implying or outright stating that a woman wearing a headscarf must be a fanatic or oppressed, or that a Muslim person expressing a progressive viewpoint, or simply disagreeing with a non-Muslim is "lying for Islam".

How wonderful that the government is cowed by "some old shrew". Given I have such power, I'll be implementing a program whereby old anti-immigrant White guys, White nationalists, anti-semitic Muslims/Imams, and other racist types are put on an island somewhere to duke it out. I'm sure I'll be able to devise a test to accurately identify those whose views are antithetical to the free, tolerant and accepting society we want in Canada.
-
And every study ever done on immigrants shows that first generation immigrants (that 70% you hate so much) are less likely to engage in crime than those born in-country; they actually reduce overall crime stats in their neighborhoods. Third generation Canadians meet national averages, and second gneration Canadians are somewhere in the middle. Making assumptions about people based on their skin color is racist. Stop doing that if you don't want to be called out on it.
-
How do you know where they are from just going by name/appearance? Perhaps they and their parents were born in Canada, which would make them "from Canada" and your assumptions racist - . "ie if they look a certain way, they are from somewhere else." Perhaps their parents were born elsewhere, and the people you see in the paper were born in Canada - again making them "from Canada", and again making your assumptions racist. Where I live, the list of "RCMP most wanted" features most white faces/names. Using your logic, I would assume that White people are prone to crime, while dark-skinned people are not.

The cost of climate change is already affecting us personally. Home insurance rates in Canada are rising due to aging infrastructure combined with more frequent and more severe weather events. In the mid-2000s, Canadian insurance companies could expect to pay out $400 million in a year; in 2018, they paid out $1.5 billion. Reinsurers are looking at the rising costs of severe weather events, particularly in North America, and ways to reduce their risk. Climate change is upending the home insurance industry. And it’s going to cost you. Fact check: Climate change is making insurance more expensive — but it’s not the only factor Munich Re, world’s largest reinsurance firm, warns premium rises could become social issue Climate Change Is Hitting the Insurance Industry Hard. Here’s How Swiss Re Is Adapting

So? They are both ahead of Canada in terms of effectively implementing policies addressing climate change. The "new" coal plants in China will also be replacing the old inefficient ones. That is progress, in the same way Canada building safer pipelines to transport our oil to local markets would be progress as opposed to eliminating pipelines and importing oil from the Middle East. The most expensive option is doing nothing. The more we do now, the less expensive it will be over the longer term. What is complicated about a carbon tax, which is proven to reduce emissions and supported by economists as most efficient and least expensive? What is complicated or expensive about eating less meat? Taking transit? Reducing/eliminating your use of plastic? Buying less stuff, especially from China? Just what are you willing to do or support?

Since when does someone else's lack of action justify your own? Isn't it the conservative whinge that people don't "take responsibility"? So show the way, and take some. Anyway, India is already doing their part, one of three countries who've implemented policies compatible with keeping global warming below two degrees Celsius. China, this year, will implement the world's most ambitious carbon trading program, and is already world leader in using renewable energy, by a factor of 2 to 1. In 2014, China committed to peak CO2 emissions in 2030, but due to its policies and progress, it is expected to peak in early 2000s. China is doing its part.** You know who isn't doing their part? Canada. If we followed the lead of places like China and India, we'd be part of the solution instead of star laggards. But we have too many people - like you - willing to actively speak and work against doing our part. Who cry about "other countries" having to make first moves, clearly oblivious to what these other countries are actually doing. We have too many politicians who pander to the whining and entitlement of people like you "for votes". Those who rail against debt being passed to our grandchildren are only too content to allow an uninhabitable world being passed down to them, so they aren't inconvenienced by carbon tax, protesters, less meat on their plate. **Source, "Guide to Chinese Climate Policy 2019". ( PDF, 169 pages detailing histororical and current state of Chinese energy use, policies and implementation of climate change mitigation policies).

So give up, good on ya.
-
Because even a 16-year-old is smarter than a middle-aged white conservative and understands that the people who led us here should be held responsible for leading us out.
-
Seriously? Suggesting actions one could take to reduce their personal impact is "browbeating"? What kind of snowflake are you? The only measure I see being actually "forced" on anyone are carbon taxes. Meat eating, reducing the use of plastic, using smaller, more fuel efficent vehicles and transit, etc - those kinds of things aren't being forced on us, yet. In 10 or 20 years, when those currently voluntary things are being forced, you'll be among those whining about how the (Liberal) governments didn't do enough, bemoaning the lack of political will that led us into this, conveniently forgetting you own refusal to accept any reduction in your lifestyle and shifting blame and responsibility to someone else. If you are still alive, that is.

Why do you continue to ignore the effect of wealth and consumerisn on global warming? Western countries, per capita, create ghg emissions at a significantly higher rate than developing countries - Per capita, Western countries do more harm than developing countries. Demanding that the poorest and least able countries reduce aggregate CO2 emissions so that you, personally don't have to do anything is beyond selfish and entitled. The people who most damage the environment come from the richest countries. Why should you be able to support emissions of 15T per year, and demand that an Indian or Asian person - who support 1.7T and 7.5T each per year, reduce their emissions before you should have to do anything. Emissions per capita and aggregate, by country Interesting comments, too. Especially the one about farts in an elevator.

Toilet paper was only "invented" for commercial use in 1857. Before that we used newspaper, pages from books and magazines, leaves, grass, ferns, corn cobs, maize, fruit skins, seashells, stone, clay, sand, snow, water. Europeans used their hand -Islamic cultures used their left hand. There are lots of options, if toilet paper ever does become outlawed. Source: toiletpaperhistory.net.

@Goddess - you are just too toxic to bother with any more.
-
To give Goddess credit where its due, she is involved with a group that helps women escape from cult-like religions. She's just got a huge blind spot when it comes to Muslims.
-
My remarks are directed specifically to those, like yourself, who use propaganda to spread misinforrmation and outright lies. Case in point: Islam says that lying to save one's life is acceptable. You, Argus, DoP and others use this out-of-context to accuse Muslims of lying about anything you don't want to hear or goes against your pre-conceived notions of Islam and Muslims. There is a huge difference between "criticizing Islam" and accusing people of lying because you've taken something out of context to refute stuff you don't want to hear or be known.
-
@Goddess ... now now, being a dishonest Islamophobe doesn't make you a monster in my book. Given I lack your creativity in engaging in hyperbole, I can assure you that I consider you merely run-of-the-mill human, driven by fear and prejudice and lacking any insight into your own attitudes. I reserve "monster" for those who actually engage in crimes against innocent people.
-
How convenient.

Since you know nothing about this person, other than their religion, why do you assume a lack of awareness is a lie? Why would anyone do that? Also, if this person rejects Hadith, accepting only Quran, then she'll believe that Islam has no punishment for homosexuality. Sure, she could be lying, but your assumption that she is based on knowing nothing more than her gender and religion looks to me like more of the "Muslim = bad" pattern you exhibit.
-
Egypt puts them in jail from time to time. In January 2019 Iran hung a homosexual man, and the Iranian government defended that. If you are really unaware of these things, you may want to take a look around the world. Religions like Islam and Christianity are terrible when used as part of governing countries. I object to many of the assumptions about Muslims that are made on this forum, but there is no doubt in my mind that Muslims would be better off if Islam was not part of any government.
-
Such respect you show. Is it because she is Muslim that you think its acceptable to call her a liar for her opinion? Or is that you just can't cope with being disagreed with?
