  1. I would say Islam is ONE of the problems, esp. Sunni Islam. Many of the non-Muslim groups you cite, e.g. IRA, UDA, Eta, have limited goals in a strictly defined territory. So the Chechen resistance at home is part of this tradition, but attacking people in other countries who have nothing to do with that conflict is quite different.
  2. Report of an F-16 fighter loyal to Erdogan shooting down a helicopter. The coup may be 5 years too late.
  3. In Pakistan, they had the madrassas and also Afghan refugees who became the Taliban, Zia's program of Islamization and a massive rise in population.
  4. Reports of Erdogan flying to Germany. You'd think he would need to deny that promptly if it wasn't true.
  5. Things not looking great for the coup leaders right now. The police are siding with Erdogan.
  6. Is 'lorry' commonly used in Canada? I don't hear too many people in Atlantic Canada saying it.
  7. What I understand from the article is that a tiny elite will have most of the wealth - the middle class as we know it will not exist. Why make a human-like machine? Same as any machine - costs will fall and the potential for improvement beyond what any human can do is clearly there. A residual group of humans will be required by the owners but most of us will not. The idea of humans plus machines is a transitional phase that machines will rapidly outstrip.
  8. Automation will threaten not only jobs but also democracy: http://nationalinterest.org/feature/when-the-robots-rise-16830?page=show
  9. Although less powerful, Putinist Russia is more unpredictable than the old Soviet Union because there are no mechanisms for an orderly succession and there's no knowing what Putin would do to save his neck. We need to pull our weight in NATO and increase military spending.
  10. The lake is the best feature, unfortunately bounded by Harbourfront. I just don't find much that is beautiful in Toronto otherwise - too much concrete and not enough hills - and it seems less friendly each time I visit. Value for money-wise, I would put it way behind other cities in Ontario esp. Ottawa. Then again, I am looking at this from a geezer's perspective.
  11. This is not good for the EU's image: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/jul/08/jose-manuel-barroso-to-become-next-head-of-goldman-sachs-international
  12. It's an illustration of how each country has its own interests and your ally's ally may be no friend of yours. India's relationship with Iran and Afghanistan is strongly influenced by the tension with Pakistan and its need to find another way into Central Asia. This is a response to the development of Gwadar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwadar_Port Iran, on the other hand, would prefer good relations with both India and China, if possible. I think the Pakistanis are very short-sighted to throw their lot in with the Chinese. Their main problems are internal, not India.
  13. I saw the headline 'Trudeau sells Canada' and wondered what it meant for a second.
  14. The foreign worker argument breaks down in London which voted Remain.
  15. He was such an easy target for the Brexiteers. Donald Tusk is much harder to mock. They need new blood at the top, people who are responsive to the frustrations of ordinary Europeans.
  16. Ordinary young people in Britain's larger cities would benefit from a big fall in property prices. Houses in London are out of sight for ordinary workers.
  17. There are some other issues with Mr. Juncker: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3625257/EU-chief-Jean-Claude-Juncker-appears-drunk-bizarre-video-hopping-foot-foot-slapping-leaders.html
  18. I imagine roads are more difficult to maintain in Canada than in France, given our climate and population density.
  19. Brexit effects continue: https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2016/jul/05/mark-carney-to-outline-bank-of-englands-brexit-stability-moves-business-live And more troubles in the Eurozone, this time in Italy: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2016/06/27/italy-eyes-40bn-bank-rescue-as-first-brexit-domino-falls/
  20. The press interests were on the side of Remain? Has Rex read the Mail etc. recently? https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jun/24/mail-sun-uk-brexit-newspapers http://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/its-press-wot-won-brexit-nows-time-show-responsibility/1400131# The Telegraph is described as on the fence here but was very much pro-Leave in its coverage.
  21. If May and Eagle win, the following posts will be occupied by women in the UK: 1. Head of state. 2. PM. 3. Labour Party leader. 4. Scottish First Minister. 5. Scottish Labour Party leader. 6. Scottish Conservative Party leader. 7. Northern Ireland First Minister. 8. Plaid Cymru leader (Wales).
  22. Gove is getting it up the Khyber for his treachery to BJ and rightly so. Looks like May is the last horse with a rider.
  23. I never said the pain would be all on one side either. The banks did not support Remain for no reason and those reasons have not gone away. If the UK gets a special BMW-friendly deal, a lot of countries will think of leaving. Influence is about more than guns and bombs. If the EU breaks up, will Russia's influence increase or decrease in Eastern Europe? I strongly suspect the former.
  24. Each of those existing deals come with different disadvantages. Which one should they take?
