  1. Economic interests are always important - NAFTA was signed by a Liberal govt after all (don't know if that would qualify as 'Left'). The only question is how much one should give up for them. How much is too much?
  2. What you are advocating does sound rather like appeasement, a prudent policy for a weak nation beside a belligerent one as long as we understand exactly what we are doing. Must say it doesn't sound like a very 'Army Guy' approach, really.
  3. I hope we can support our own PM at this difficult time. Of course, there are those who will criticize Trudeau for anything he does regarding Trump: if he is restrained they will call him a hypocrite; and if he's more candid they will complain about that too.
  4. Trump is not named in the tweet and given that he seems to spend an inordinate amount of time himself insulting other people in such messages, he doesn't have much to complain about really.
  5. I'd like to see CRA get tough with KPMG first: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/kpmg-cra-delays-court-1.3635155
  6. Where there's no will, there's no way. Those promises to work in the boonies turn out to be surprisingly difficult to enforce. Young people want to live in cities and the medical associations are not willing to give sufficient bonuses (which would come from the pay packets of doctors in cities) to make the outback attractive. In my province there is a clear segregating tendency in the medical workforce: younger, urban, Canadian females; older, rural, foreign males.
  7. Here's a view from a Conservative source: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/444388/trump-executive-order-implementation-problems
  8. In medicine, the Canadians don't want to work in small towns at all. It's often IMG or nothing.
  9. I have worked with excellent physicians from Syria, Iraq and Iran and would consider myself lucky to do so again. Your immigration data may not be detailed enough to reflect that reality.
  10. Early days yet. The numbers detained and deterred from coming will mount up over the next four years. Some border wiseguy is alleged to have told a person to 'call Mr. Trump' if they had any complaints. Try a joke like that on one them and what sports they are.
  11. The odd thing about Iran is that its citizens have little interest in terrorism once they reach the US, as the record clearly shows, and the 'state-sponsored terrorism' is generally local, in Asia. There's something amateurish and capricious about springing this move both on travelers and on US officials who have to enforce it. Information could have been gathered first and then people could have been given fair warning it was coming. For Canadian recruiters, this could be good news. We may see some professionals with sought-after skills looking north for jobs.
  12. Tariffs won't stop automation taking manufacturing jobs away. Trump is offering an inaccurate diagnosis that will harm the patient.
  13. The order was stupid, though. If you are taking such a big step you have to plan and warn people ahead of time. Leaving permanent residents stranded in airports does not send a message of competence.
  14. That sounds more like it - in line with a larger effort to control people. Eventually, only the oligarchs will have two passports.
  15. First rule of politics: always take credit when you can. You are going to be blamed for loads of things you didn't do so grab any good news that's passing.
  16. What if they possess another passport but don't travel on it?
  17. A foolish move. Twitter is a very dangerous place for politicians. The weekend has been extraordinary already - chaos and confusion caused by Trump as usual - but our PM should say as little as possible until the dust has cleared.
  18. I suspect non-citizen foreign medical graduates based in the US (esp. from the seven countries already targeted) will be showing considerably more interest in Canadian posts over the next year. Iranian, Iraqi and Syrian physicians are generally excellent.
  19. Platitudes are underrated - too many people trying to be original these days. They are generally inoffensive and often true.
  20. You have nothing constructive to offer.
  21. Platitudes. Well now. You are perfectly entitled to your opinion.
  22. You seem to take a rather dim view of South Asia's capacity for change. My solution involves trade. Prosperity empowers people and makes them more ambitious for their kids.
  23. A while back somebody asked why the 'obsession' with Trump. I hope they can see why now.
  24. I didn't know you cared so much for the huddled masses beyond our shores. BTW what's your plan for helping South Asia?
  25. We Canadians cannot compete in that industry any more. We cannot do it cheaply enough. If we try, we will lose our shirts, so to speak. Across South Asia, jobs in such areas as telemarketing and manufacturing are empowering the disadvantaged castes and creating a more meritocratic and just society. Every year, the cars at Dalit meetings increase in number and size.
