Harper in Colombia

Recommended Posts

The President is a nice guy. Columbian Maurico Soler took stage 9 of the Tour de France today, the President gave him a phone call:

"I'm Alvaro Uribe Velez, Colombia's President...I was engaged today in an official meeting in Medellin, but I was informed about your extraordinary performance and I have wished to express immediately my joy!"

Soler responded: "I'm honoured to receive your compliments, and to have given some moment of happiness to all my compatriots," responded Soler to the president's comments. "It was a really hard race, Mr President, I'm feeling so tired."

The Tories were responsible for no contact for seven months. The Chinese tried to get their ambassador to meet MacKay and were rebuffed until the Globe and Mail reported it. What a way to run a ship.

Yes, the proper way to run a ship is to refer to your trading partners as morons and bastards.

I can't recall Chretien or his cabinet ever saying such a thing. And any time someone in government or a public service did something like that, they were disciplined.

Certainly the government didn't ever refuse to meet a foreign ambassador for seven months before.

Yup. Somehow the treatment of America is of no concern. Must speak 'truth to power'.

Gotta love the hypocrisy hypocracy of the left.

Certain posters can't recall "Chretien or his cabinet" ever saying such a thing. Ohhh so cleverly omitting Chretien's senior staffers and his caucus. Very, very sad indeed.

Caution: You wouldn't want everything a CPC caucus member has ever said to be reflective of government policy.

Martin was "tight" with the yanks. As was McKenna. And especially the men that put Martin and Chretien into power through Canada's Carlyle, Power Corp..

I really have no reason to believe that the Liberals ever had 'pissing of the yanks' as part of their policy.

Their party's radical elements just tend to draw the kooks that hate all things US. This is why they can't be trusted to govern Canada just yet... they need to weed out the wackos.

Everything a CPC caucus member says should be reflective of Government policy. They are the Government. Name anything a caucus member has said since we formed Government that is hurtful to Harper?

But Harper being called a 'control freak' has some very positive upside for the party and Canada.

Nobody would dare shoot off their mouths or go off script. That is truly the way it should be.

Ducrois and Bennett were embarassments who would have been gone the following day if they had been working for/sitting as Conservatives after making the comments they did.

Is this a better way to govern? Absolutely.

I see you say "we" when referring to the Conservatives.

Wasn't it Harper who criticized Liberal backbench MPs for being quiet on important issues of the day? Check the Conservative party site. I'm sure you will find that they once said they would stifle their own MPs.

Yes. I am a Conservative party member.

I guarantee you members of the Progressive Conservative Party and the Canadian Alliance chastised Chretien's then Director of Communications Francoise Ducros for calling Bush a moron in 2002.

I guarantee you any Conservative MP stomping on a GW Bush doll on National TV would have been out of caucus the next morning. No dithering for a full 24 hours to gauge public reaction to the terribly offensive act.

Show me where Stephen Harper said anything in support of the freedom of his MPs to perform such utterly childish and juvenile acts. Parrish's childish act was only "an important issue of the day" because of the serious damage it did to Canada-US relations.

So Stevie duck taped his caucus and his staff... whoopee!!!

And now he is again copy-catting Chretien with his "third way" speeches which contradict his previous statements and probably what he really thinks about Canada.

After all, this is a man who said of his own country:

Quote:

"Canada is a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term, and very proud of it." (Stephen Harper, Address to the Council for National Policy, June 1997)

"Canada appears content to become a second-tier socialistic country, boasting ever more loudly about its economy and social services to mask its second-rate status, led by a second-world strongman appropriately suited for the task." (Stephen Harper, National Post, December 8, 2000)

"There is not a national government because there is not a national economy, no national culture, no national defence. The problem is not that the wrong party is running Ottawa. The problem is Ottawa." (Stephen Harper, L'Actualité Magazine, May 15, 2001)

It's called duct tape. tsk tsk tsk Who is the one who really hates Canada?

He's been in power for a year and a half and hasn't eatten any kittens but it's still about a ten year old speech and what he really thinks about Canada - i.e. *scary* *scary* *scary*?

Good work sir. You are a credit to honest and fair debate.

Trudeau wore a Nazi helmet when he was young, so he obviously "really thought" Canada should be Nazi.

I'm not really sure what Trudeau did in his youth. Doesn't really matter. Definitely doesn't matter to Liberal Party of Canada supporters. Saint Pierre could do no wrong. Unless you were from west of Kenora. Then he just gave you the finger.

It's only conservatives that should be judged on their past. Liberals should only be judged on their recent, relevant actions. Didn't you know that is how the rules go?

Why is it that everytime I read of Harper's visits to foreign countries, whether it be Colombia, Palestine or China, human rights are a central issue? Colombia does not need to be chastised over its human rights record, it needs to engage in meaningful dialogue with the developed world on how to deal with its political instability, small arms proliferation and the public weal.

For over half a century Colombia has been plagued by civil war between rebel guerrilla groups and paramilitant organizations. Human rights violations are to be EXPECTED in a country which, as recently as 1999, hadn't achieved a stable coalition government in years. To criticize the head of the Colombian government is a cowardly, politicized move on Harper's part. The paramilitants who wield tremendous clout over Colombian politics should be the object of focus. The history of violence which has characterized late 20th century Colombian politics is not the fault of one man, nor can it be stopped by the one man who holds questionable power, despite his formal title.

During the last election Paul Martin went out of his way to criticise the United States for not signing onto the Kyoto agreement, and to link the conservatives with George Bush - even though the Americans' environmental policies have actually been stronger than that of the Liberal government.
