Monsanto's GM Corn linked to liver, kidney toxicity in animals

A variety of genetically modified corn that was approved for human consumption in 2006 caused signs of liver and kidney toxicity as well as hormonal changes in rats in a study performed by researchers from the independent Committee for Independent Research and Genetic Engineering at the University of Caen in France.

Given the alarming demise of so many bees, as well that recent study on rats fed GM foods I'm curious as to what others here think of the introduction into the food chain of never consumed protiens.

Personally, I think that playing G-d in this manner is rather foolish to say the least, in addition arrogant beyond words.

We should realise that these studies and reports are published by people who are against GM foods from the start. In spite of the possibility of bias, this is an area which bears watching, and further study, in my view.

Perhaps global warming caused GM foods. No, wait...perhaps GM foods caused Global Warming?

Hi scribbles...

I see you don't change your stripes either...

have anything to say about GM foods? Anything perhaps to add? Are you for it or against it? If you are for it - under what 'so-called' criteria?

No? Nothing to say other than your usual?

Hee

GM foods are our only hope of dealing with the millions that starve everyday.

I eat some GM foods, I don't have a problem with it. It's all rather harmless from my perspective.

I'd take a long look at the milk and beef that your eatting with all the growth hormones before I would be concerned about GM. I've always wondered why people haven't looked more in depth into the correlation between feeding cows things to make them fat, and the millions of fat kids that eat beef.

At the moment I'm leaning towards GM foods being harmless, or at least less harmful than many other products on the market.

One good point is that many genetically modified/enhanced plants can be made immune to certain types of pests...thus reducing the use of insecticide. Anyone living near a food growing area knows how much of that stuff gets sprayed around.

I tend to agree that there should be much more study before they are allowed open growth. Cows and such being fed growth hormones should also be seriously studied. The fat cow/fat citizen connection seems likely.

It came as bit of a surprise to me that as much as 60 % of

our food in Canada is genetically modified,

i thought the number would be much lower.

It seems we're lagging behind our european counterparts

in demanding labeling laws here, never minding banning it outright.

Health Canada and The Canadian Food Inspection Agency seem

to think there is no problem.

What exactly is wrong with GM foods?

I thought

that the modifications were mainly dealing with

making crops resistant to disease,and

helping them grow in less then optimum conditions.

P.S. I know the article is a bit dated

but i don't my point is negated by that.

Not flooding the market with subsidized foods is our only hope of dealing with the millions that starve, let them be able to grow their own food.

All GM foods are modified for is to make spraying applications easier 1 spray vs. 5. It's not poison. Why would they make it harmful, they'd get their ass sued to kingdom come. Stupid fearmongering hippies.

Those cows when they are getting "finished" at the feedlots are in pens and are fed basically straight grain and don't move around, that's why they are so fat. And as you know the fat gives the meat it's flavor. Angus beef has a "marbling" quality to it. I personally don't use growth hormones, the calves get shipped every fall/winter. People have been eating beef forever, there's nothing wrong with it.

I eat beef on occassion, but I try to limit my consumption (red meat in general isn't meant to be an everyday thing). I am quite concerned about the growth hormones, you don't use them but I'm sure many do.

Apparently, after researching this a little bit on Wikipedia though, I discover that it's banned in Canada, though imports can contain these hormones.

Interesting. So as long as I eat my Alberta Beef, I'm ok? Hmm..
