With Jack Layton launching an ad showing how he cares about Canada and Harper's budget breaking Canada apart, which is more possible today?

Harper has a chance at a majority, but I think it has little to do with any Federal Budget or anything Jack Layton says or does.

There is one reason and one reason only that Harper has a chance to get a majority - his name is Dion. With such an unattractive leader, the Liberals are hamstrung.

The Conservatives should understand this concept very well - remember Joe Clark, Preston Manning and Stockwell Day? All were electorally poor choices for leader. If the public doesn't like your leader, no one cares what your policies are, you just lose elections.

The chances of an NDP minority in Ottawa ranks right up there with the proverbial snowball in hell.

I agree with you 100% regarding Dion...Joe Clark though was probably the best Prime Minister Canada didn't get a chance to know......

Agreed for the most part. Day was an unmitigated disaster as leader who has surprised as a cabinet minister. Snowball's chance in hell indeed!

I think Clark and Manning are pretty similar. Both had their chances and blew them due to tactical mistakes. Clark forcing/allowing himself to lose the budget vote in 1980 was a terrible decision. Clark entered his minority with about the same level of esteem as Harper entered his. No matter what side of the aisle you sit on you have to agree that Harper has grown in the job whereas Clark never really did. Clark should have done whatever he needed to do until Trudeau was out the door for real.

Manning could have made the timing of the election in 1997, during the Red River flooding, an issue. He still would have lost, but could have held the Liberals to a minority. Then the knives would have come out and

Chretien would have been gone. Does anybody think Martin would have been a better PM in the late 90s than he was in in 2004-2006?

Lets see, Conservatives have 39% in the polls, and the NDP are currently at 13%, I wonder which is more likely to become government.
