Figleaf
Like 'rights', absent a collective recognition, morality would mean no more than what each person claims about it from moment to moment. Like 'rights', in the absense of the measure of society, 'morality' is just a cacophony of interests. I say eating fish is immoral, you say eating pork is immoral. And I say killing or theft is immoral regardless of society's measure. Re killing: in war?, in self-defence?, in execution of murderers?, in defence of property? Re theft: define 'theft'. Charles Anthony
So simple, isn't it?No, it is not simple. It is ambiguous. I got 3 out of 3I give it a 0 out of 3 until there is clarity. Our society provides equal opportunity for everyone. define: "society" "equal opportunity" A child born to poor, ignorant, isolated parents has the same opportunities as a child born to wealthy, educated, influential parents define: "poor" and "wealthy" "ignorant" and educated" "isolated" and "influential" "opportunities" Resources, knowledge, and social contacts don't contribute to success. define: "success"

Charles Anthony
Well, now, let us start with the first one: so·ci·e·ty Pronunciation (s-s-t) n. pl. so·ci·e·ties 1. a. The totality of social relationships among humans. b. A group of humans broadly distinguished from other groups by mutual interests, participation in characteristic relationships, shared institutions, and a common culture. c. The institutions and culture of a distinct self-perpetuating group. 2. An organization or association of persons engaged in a common profession, activity, or interest: a folklore society; a society of bird watchers. 3. a. The rich, privileged, and fashionable social class. b. The socially dominant members of a community. 4. Companionship; company: enjoys the society of friends and family members. 5. Biology A colony or community of organisms, usually of the same species: an insect society. FigLeaf's clear definition of "society" So?? Which one do you want? or do you want the circular argumentative flexibility of having them all? The poll still gets 0 out of 3 until there is clarity. Figleaf
...So?? Which one do you want? ... !!! Are you really trying to tell us you're incapable of discerning from the context which of those definitions is applicable? Why would you denigrate your own intelligence in that way? Or is it just possible you're raising a jejune objection simply to be contrary?
geoffrey
I disagree Figleaf. Care to explain to me how you can measure the success of one's life?
Figleaf
I disagree Figleaf.Care to explain to me how you can measure the success of one's life? Disagree with what? I think you can respond to the poll without needing me specify measures of success. Use your own measures.
