August1991 Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 "America has always cared what white people could do, not what they look like."I'm with jbg on this one.The US has been far from perfect but compared to almost every other place in the world, it is a haven of individual freedom. I recall reading an interview with a young Eurasian girl (born of mixed European/Asian parents) about the relief she felt when she started to live in Los Angeles. She was not ashamed to walk in the street. Such stories abound. Canada, the US and South America (to a degree) are places where marriage between races and religion are common. Elsewhere, it is unthinkable for someone to marry outside of their caste let alone their religion or race. Europe does not offer the same degree of individual freedom. ---- With that said, I agree with BD about the "demographics argument". Steyn should have known better before he got involved in demography. It's the science of seductively false certainty. Steyn likes to argue that you can predict the world of 2050 by today's births. Well, you can't - and BD has noted a few of the problems. Quote
Black Dog Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 I'm with jbg on this one. So you're also willing to ignore the significant contradictions of a statement along the lines of "with the exception of Blacks, Chinese, Japanese, Mexicans, Aboriginals, South Asians and variously, Jews, Irish, and Italians, America has been a very welcoming place." Now, I'm not gonna dispute your assertion about the United States offering a significant level of individual freedom. I just don't know what that has to do with the subject at hand. As statements go, its fairly trite. Quote
Black Dog Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Interesting study... Muslims in Europe Muslims in Europe worry about their future, but their concern is more economic than religious or cultural. IOW jobs, not jihad. Opinions held by Muslims in Europe – as well as opinions about Muslims among Europe’s majority populations – vary significantly by country. No clear European point of view emerges with regard to the Muslim experience, either among Muslims or in the majority populations on many issues. So there's no Muslim consensus. Which, as I said above, is to be expected given the diversity within Europeans Muslims population. The French public is also more inclined this year to say that Muslims living in France want to adopt French customs – a view held by an overwhelming majority of Muslims in France. Hmm...so most French Mulsims want to be French. Which, I expect, is why they came in the first place. European Muslims show signs of favoring a moderate version of Islam. With the exception of Spanish Muslims, they tend to see a struggle being waged between moderates and Islamic fundamentalists. Among those who see an ongoing conflict, substantial majorities in all four countries say they generally side with the moderates. Most French and British Muslims think women are better off in their countries than in most Muslim countries. About half of German and Spanish Muslims agree, and very few think women actually have it better in most Muslim countries. Moreover, most are not concerned about Muslim women in Europe taking on modern roles in society (although substantial minorities worry about this.) Religion is central to the identity of European Muslims. With the exception of Muslims in France, they tend to identify themselves primarily as Muslim rather than as British, Spanish, or German. In France, Muslims are split almost evenly on this question. That's disturbing. Maybe this is the silver bullet showing the failure of Europussy multiculti feelgood politics. Americans, however, split about evenly on this question: 42% say they first think of themselves as Christians versus 48% who think of themselves primarily as Americans – a divide close to that found among French Muslims. What? Oh. Quote
