windyman Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 Good, I'm very happy. The last thing we need if for Mexico to become another socialist state under Obrador. Quote Cons are bad nazis
lost&outofcontrol Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 Good, I'm very happy. The last thing we need if for Mexico to become another socialist state under Obrador. The man is definitely not socialist. His party was originally a socialist party but in the past few years has radically moved towards the center to appeal to a wider voter base. Quote

He is the lefter of the two, but anyway, he's demanding a full recount and things down there are a little unsettled. Quote

Look at where that got Layton. For once I agree with you geoffrey. Marginalize your supporters for the possibility of gaining votes and you lose sight of your original goal. Obrador's party stabbed the Zapatista mouvment in the back and look where they're at now. Quote

BBC With the election of Calderon, North America is once again, a conservative continent. Don't kid yourself -- Canada is still as liberal as we ever were. Our social net is still there, gays are still getting married, legalizing pot is still an option... As a people, we are all liberal leaning -- except for maybe 2 or 3 rednecks in check shirts, eating bacon, swilling beer while watching the hockey game in their ice fishing hut. Rue Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 First of all the vote will be contested. Secondly if any of you think Mexico is better off with a "conservative" government as opposed to a "socialist" one understand Mexican politics is not that simple. Obrador is not a socialist, he's a populist. He has no economic theories or clearly delineated political philosophy. He is very typical of many Mexicans. They are alienated and feel powerless to stop the coruption the few elites who run the country. So I wouldn't simply label him as a socialist. He has not thought out his platform at all. He has never been able to clearly state what his economic policies are because he is not skilled enough to discuss the economy. You have to listen carefully to what he really is about-being suspicious of multi-nationals and the U.S. As for the alleged conservative who won, he is part of the legacy in Mexican politics of coruption. Mexico has always been and will always be corupt. A minority of its population, less then 2% has a strangle hold on its economy and the government. The government from head to toe operates on multiple layers of coruption. The police and military are its largest drug smugglers and people smugglers. So smile all you want but for the average Mexican, its business as usual- a corupt government, no social services, and the vast majority of the population living below the poverty line and dying from malnutrition and pollution.
