MightyAC Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Here are federal spending numbers by department. These numbers were taken from Conservative MP Garth Turner's blog (www.garth.ca/weblog/) If anyone is not familiar with Mr. Turner I recommend checking out his site. This guy converses with his constituents on a regular basis through every possible medium. He also produces a web cast from parliament hill where he interviews various MPs and civil servants in an attempt to show us little people what it's like in government. He also criticizes his own government if he feels they made a mistake. What a great MP. I wish we could clone him and spread him around the country...but I digress. Here are the spending numbers. I find them surprising. Note how many departments receive less money than the CBC. Also note how much we spend on Indian Affairs... We give money to the CMHC??? With the fees they collect shouldn't they be self sustaining? Also note how little departments like Parks and Environment Canada receive. Between the military and veterans affairs 18 billion is spent..whoa. I really don't know exactly what each department does but the numbers are interesting anyway.. Note the numbers do not include any debt servicing charges. Charles Anthony Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 My rough estimation is just under $70,000,000,000 in total. That comes to about $24,000 per Canadian -- man woman and child. That is a lot. Quote We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society. << Où sont mes amis ? Ils sont ici, ils sont ici... >>

Canada and California have roughly the same population. California's Budget is rougly $131 billion per annum; Canada's budget is roughly $212 billion. Even adjusting for currency, that's $190 billion. Granted, Canada has military and embassy expenses that California lacks. However, when one adds provincial budgets, the disproportion is staggering. Topaz Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Yeah, that's alot of money! I heard the spending on the military, which is needed, but the equipment won't get to the guys in Afghanistan for 3 years, which we are suppose to be out of there, aren't we?????? The really big aircraft will take 6 years to be delivered. Lets go back to "peacekkeeping" its cheaper and doesn't cost as much in Canadian soldiers lifes! By the way, how many KNEW O'Connor was waiting for Parliament to break before announcing all this???? Noticed how they gave themselves an increase in pay to cover expenses living in Ottawa. What about the rest of the people in Ottawa who could use a hike in pay. Wait until the Fed. workers contracts come up and want a raise!!! Quote
Michael Hardner Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 It's comparing apples and oranges, but it's an interesting exercise nonetheless. You would probably have to add health insurance costs to even it up, then account for the high number of uninsured in California. It's quite an exercise if you're up to it. geoffrey Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Sad that we spend as much on CBC as on Justice or our parks system. No wonder we have so many fat kids, we pay for their TV but don't give them places to play outside... Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --

Our park system could be drastically improved with relatively little cash. It could be a symbol of national pride and a tool in battling our obesity epidemic. Build it and they will come. cybercoma Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 Over $1 Billion spent on CBC, that's wild. Imagine what that money could actually be used for. Television stations should not be run on taxpayers money, I can't even wrap my mind around that by any stretch. People wait hours upon hours to get in to see doctors and we're spending $1 Billion on Hockey Night in Canada and The National. The border crossing at Windsor is so damn congested that people are getting cancer in that city at an alarming rate and it easily has some of the highest pollution in the nation. A plan was drawn up by Sam Schwartz, traffic consultant for New York City and it would have a one time cost of roughly $1 Billion and the federal/provincial governments turn up their noses at it. Too much money. Yeah, too much when you have to pay more than that to CBC year after year. Quote

Who else would sponsor those editorials dressed up as news articles, or the anti-American fun of Rick Mercer? geoffrey Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 Why does the Treasury Board Secretariat need $2b? Here is their mandate: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/common/us-nous_e.asp That is one hell of an expensive internal audit department.
