August1991 Posted May 18 Report Posted May 18 Thucydides Trap? 1. Trump is American? No problem. 2. Crimea is Russian, Taiwan is Chinese. 3. Let's avoid war - get along in a new Kissinger arrangement. Quote

The reason the Chinese are doing well is not due to their own industriousness, per se, but because they have minimal environmental and safety regulations, letting them circumvent the laws that western countries agreed to. But the west are hypocrites in showing themselves as "clean", all the while using China as a proxy to manufacture the cheapest goods we want. Environmental, animal and human rights be damned. That is how they're getting rich. Whatever future world you like to see with China, I disagree. Edited May 18 by Goober National 1 Quote

This moment may now be at hand. American science has been the envy of the planet since the Second World War at least, but it has recently gone into decline. After President Trump took office last year, his administration started vandalizing the country’s scientific institutions, suspending research grants in bulk and putting entire lines of cutting-edge research on ice. In August, Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services canceled $500 million in mRNA-vaccine research, less than two years after Americans won a Nobel Prize for pioneering that technology. More than 10,000 science Ph.D.s have left the federal workforce, according to one group’s estimate, and the White House has been withholding money from frontline researchers in computer science, biomedicine, and hundreds of other fields that will define the human future. As one historian of science put it to me in July, “This is an unparalleled destruction from within.” 1 Quote

While their country has appalling failings they have worked hard and smart for their success. Quote ‘How small we make our worlds. Gather them in, tighten them up into little castles of fear.’

Does that praise include their record on abusing human rights, including slave labour? Probably not, but that's how you get to make things cheaply, and sell them at discount shops. Disagree. The Chinese are industrious. True. But like Confucious, they cannot create anything new. ====== I recall an old joke. Hong Kong will have a new copyright act. They copied it from America. No. I would like to see the Western model of liberal democracy in every country. However, we are not going to deal with China effectively by denying the threat it poses. China is successful despite its dreadful system, not because of it. The country has so many brilliant entrepreneurs and engineers that they can overcome the obstacles put in their path by Xi and Co.
