500channelsurfer Posted January 21 Report Posted January 21 History teaches us that unipolar and bi-polar worlds are stable. Tri-polar worlds are inherently unstable and quickly lead to unipolar and bi-polar worlds (examples: World War 1, World War 2). Currently, we are closer to a bipolar world than a tripolar world. Russia has not the navy nor the air force to expand rapidly and largely, geographically. They have been pushing into Ukraine for years and have not secured victory, with that war 's emphasis on their their military's strength: their ground forces. Ukraine has been fighting back with second rate and previous-generation NATO technology and supplies principally. Russia is a regional power, not a world power. Russia can threaten the world with its nukes and hypersonic capabilities, but does not have the military to conquer and ongoingly occupy new territories. Trump in Venezuela is merely continuing the American tradition of subduing potentially hostile regimes in Latin America. Quote
SpankyMcFarland Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 (edited) Russia isn’t in that league. If it manages to hang onto Siberia it will be a regional threat like Israel, Turkey or India. This spheres of influence idea is bad news for South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. They must rearm dramatically and consider nukes. John Stone Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 I'll play the Devil's advocate and say that considering Canada's size, the relatively small population and the bottomless watershed of natural resources it's future in terms of economy can only continue to grow. The problem for Canada is likely in terms of sovereignty - not the south, the north............ specifically sea routes. The country will need (crucial) to ally itself to defend it's north (diplomacy) Likely that country will be the U.S. because it makes sense - but that is not a slam dunk either. The rub is, the conditions - what 100 year lease and on what, what sharing, if any? Quote
SpankyMcFarland Posted February 9 Report Posted February 9 Russia is a zombie state that barely controls its territory east of the Urals. The irony is that it needed Western support against China and chose to reject that. Unless there is radical reform and an end to Putinism, I can’t see it being more than a Chinese satellite.
