TORONTO - A Canadian counter-terrorism investigation that led to the arrests of 17 people accused of plotting bombings in Ontario is linked to probes in a half-dozen countries, the National Post has learned.

Well before police tactical teams began their sweeps around Toronto on Friday, at least 18 related arrests had already taken place in Canada, the United States, Britain, Bosnia, Denmark, Sweden, and Bangladesh.

The six-month RCMP investigation, called Project OSage, is one of several overlapping probes that include an FBI case called Operation Northern Exposure and a British probe known as Operation Mazhar.

At a news conference Saturday, the RCMP announced terrorism-related charges had been laid against a dozen Toronto-area men and five teens under the age of 18.

The group “took steps to acquire components necessary to create explosive devices” including three tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, commonly used in terrorist bombs, police said.

By comparison, the truck bomb used to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995, killing 168 people, contained a single tonne of ammonium nitrate.

“It was their intent to use it for a terrorist attack,” RCMP assistant commissioner Mike McDonell said.

“This group posed a real threat. It had the capacity and intent to carry out these attacks.”

What really scares me about this is that is would seem to a lot of Canadians that since this didn't happen, that it wouldn't have happened. These little punks would've been SOOOO proud and happy with themselves if only they could've killed a few dozen (hundred?) of us. The more the better. They would've felt so powerful and happy to see people YOU know or love twisting in the dirt looking for their arm or their eyes.

They should've just let them go ahead and do it. As it is this isn't really a wake up call at all.

On a less vengeful note, I worry about the other Muslims in the country. There will be so much hysteria over Muslims here who have a tacit approval of terrorist activity that the ones (like my neighbours across the road) who are totally non-violent will be faced with crap from people. There are so many muslims here who, unfortunately, not only have nothing to do with it, but to whom the thought of hurting people is far more alien than your average "Go-Oilerzz" pinhead.

Well slightly. the door and some glass was broken, nothing else. I guess someone realized what they were doing half way through, or they were scared off by something. I just hope people don't go all crazy and just chill out before they decide to throw that next rock.

OH and linking to TWO people in the US is not what I would consider WORLDWIDE LINKS TO TERRORISM.

See this is exactly the 'rationale' we're dealing with here. There are vague demands and even more vague accusations, but really they just want to hurt you, there really isn’t a reason. I mean this guy is complaining about racism and discrimination and yet you can just tell by reading it he's really a 'Muslim supremist'. ...and we all have to treat them different and revere them more and honour them more because if we don't (and we never will since that's entirely up to their conjecture) we will get bombed. Against all evidence to the contrary they think this will work. To them fear = respect which to any rational adult is understood to be wrong.

They will say "We're not afraid to die" but all that's really relevant is how willing we are to kill them, which, since Iraq or Afghanistan has yet to become a nuked wasteland shows which of us truly has the most-brains-over-emotion.

CANADIAN TERROR BUST

In a series of police raids last night, over 400 RCMP officers in joint operation with CSIS, arrested up to 12 suspects across Ontario suspected of plotting a series of terrorist attacks in the province including one in downtown Toronto at an office building near the CN Tower.

RCMP press release:

TORONTO, June 3 /CNW/ - On Friday, June 2, 2006, members of the RoyalCanadian Mounted Police and partners of the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team arrested 12 individuals and charged them under Section 83 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

This group took steps to acquire three tonnes of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell. "To put this in context, the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people took one tonne of ammonium nitrate."

Arrested and charged with offences under the Criminal Code of Canada are:

1. Fahim Ahmad, 21, of Robinstone Drive, Toronto, Ontario;

2. Zakaria Amara, 20, of Periwinkle Crescent, Mississauga, Ontario;

3. Asad Ansari, 21, of Rosehurst Drive, Mississauga, Ontario;

4. Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, of Lowville Heights, Mississauga, Ontario;
