The employment decrease in August was mostly in part-time work (-60,000; -1.5%). Full-time employment was little changed in August, following a decline in July (-51,000; -0.3%). Unemployment rate rises to 7.1% in August The unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.1% in August. Since January 2025, it has increased 0.5 percentage points. The unemployment rate in August was the highest since May 2016 (excluding 2020 and 2021). We are very clearly into a recession, unemployment is going up, costs aren't going down, and it's a safe bet with many new tariffs just hitting now that things will get worse before they get better. Carney has made a series of bad choices and as a result he failed to 'supercharge' the economy as promised. And as people lose jobs and see things get worse i doubt his popularity will go up. He's wasted his first 6 months in office and even if he started to realize that now and started to do the right things it's too late to have an effect in the immediate future.
