Under Sanction!??? The firms that built the Siberian oil were all American or European,

Not really.  And russia has been producing all the parts and components for years.

Some of the DESIGNS were american or european. But the actual pumps in russia are not. There are a handful of components for their large underwater systems that ship oil that they struggle to maintain themselves but nobody's going to cut europe off from oil any time soon.

Again you're getting to the point of being childish.  Russia will have all the fuel it needs or wants. Russia and china will have no practical physical barriers to trade. There is nothing stopping them except their gov'ts.  And while that is actually a pretty significant hurdle that could change in a heartbeat.  If they both realize us trade is gone, they will have to look at other options and the whole reason the us allowed such favoreed terms to china was because they KNEW they could easily fall under the russian economic sphere and that would be a problem.

So never mind the vast tyrrany of distance of a frozen waste land? You canucks know full well the difficulties of maintaining infrastructure on permafrost.

I think everybody should be deeply concerned about China’s recent move to restrict rare earth exports. The stock market tumbled in response and even I noticed my puny mutual funds taking a hit.

China doesn’t do these things lightly. They must have thoroughly thought this through and decided they could take such a drastic step that affects the whole world. Trump’s retaliatory threat to massively jack up tariffs on Chinese products would affect his career prospects more quickly than Xi’s if carried through.

With the benefit of hindsight, as they say, the West should never have let itself become so dependent on China for these products. Rare earths are not that rare, only difficult to extract and refine. We have abundant quantities of them in Canada but it would take a long time to replace the Chinese supply.

I note that trump just bought a 10 percent interest in one of our rare mineral companies.

The US is now buying it form Pakistan , all this is just virtue signaling the important thing to consider is how exposed is your mtt ur al fund to the Chinese market. The less exposed it is, the higher the likelihood of something big is happening. The smart money will get out if they know something is about to go down. Otherwise, treat it as background noise and business as usual.

Virtue signalling? I don’t treat it as background noise. My portfolio agrees with me. Can Pakistan fill the void China leaves? Even if it could would China allow it to?

Atleast not with the current processing technology that is available. You’ll need capital investment into this sector to make it viable. Hence, the reason for Trump wanting the 51st. Why would you want to invest in a strategic industry and not make it your own!?

B’y, FYI on a Canadian forum that’s trolling - pure, simple and stupid. Do you expect me to make remarks about your family now or something?

Only if you Canucks keep on insisting that being American is somehow offensive to you, I’m happy to oblige. I find Canadians more Americans than some actual Americans at times. To be fair, it’s not like we can tell each other apart in the first place.

Yes , Canada lacks the capital to invest and build out the mineral processing infrastructure. This will require “foreign” investment from your southern cousin.

Nope, lots of investors around the world who are happy to invest.

Strange that trump did tho... didn't he claim there was nothing canada has that the us wants?

It wouldn’t be anyone around the world because we’re the only one who buys it for semiconductor manufacturing. China didn’t ban other countries, just the US.

It would literally be anyone around the world. It doesn't matter who buys it, if somebody's buying it investors want to be part of that and will invest. That's how it works

And? That makes us an even better investment for investors around the world
