It's not like we haven't had bad relations in the past and worked it out. Canada was formed because the brit colonies had a free trade deal with the states and they cancelled it and threatened invasion again.  Britian said "think you better 'country' up to prevent an invasion and that's when Canada was formed.  And we all got over that eventually. 

In the end, the benefits of a peaceful relationship where we've got each other's backs when the occasional war breaks out is simply too valuable not to get back to it sooner or later.
