Right wing ascendance to EU mainstream could impact Canada trade, climate policy (Right makes stunning gains in Europe elections)

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he's taking an optimistic approach after Europeans made a lurch to the far-right in continental elections that could impact Canada's trade and climate policies.

"It shows that the far-right is becoming more mainstream across Europe," said Achim Hurrelmann, co-director of the Centre for European Studies at Carleton University.

"They have really now become a persistent part of party systems, that we need to reckon with."

Far-right parties surged in this past weekend's vote for the European Parliament, taking share from mainstream parties across the continent through a system of proportional representation.

French President Emmanuel Macron made a surprise call for early legislative elections after his party suffered a heavy loss to the far-right National Rally party, which gained 31 per cent of votes. Some 16 per cent of German votes went to the extreme-right Alternative for Germany, despite a series of scandals and accusations of racism.

Hurrelmann said countries like Italy and Austria also saw strong growth in support for parties that were previously deemed fringe, but have recently struck a more moderate tone.

"Far-right parties do now exist as a meaningful political force, in most of the (EU) member states," he said.

Hurrelmann said this past weekend's vote comes at a time when there are challenges across the continent in addressing concerns around the cost of living and immigration.

The main takeaways after the far right rocks European politics, sparking a snap election in France

POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE IN FRANCE

Voters in France will return to the polls in just three weeks after Macron dissolved parliament and called snap national elections. Le Pen’s anti-immigration, nationalist party was estimated to get around 31%-32% of the vote. While a National Rally win was expected, the scale of the victory was a surprise, more than doubling the share of Macron’s Renaissance party, which was projected to reach around 15%. It should become clear by mid-July whether a weakened Macron will be forced to work with a far-right government in an uncomfortable “cohabitation.”

And this is what always happens. I have been saying this for quite some time. The left runs amok and eventually people have had enough and they wind up turning to the right thinking it's the only place they have to go. He's left-wing nut bars who decided it was a great idea to let a couple of million refugees into their country have driven their countries directly into the hands of the far right.

It will happen in canada too at the rate we're going. Extreme left always begets extreme right.

If liberals insist that enforcing borders is a job only fascists will do, then voters will hire fascists to do the job liberals won't. - David Frum 2018

This is sort of tongue-and-cheek, but it's pretty much correct.  Human disasters like the Orange Blob don't even get a sniff at elected office without a rage issue like porous borders to stoke to flame.  It's the #1 losing issue for the Trudeau Liberals as well.  Navel-gazing and waxing poetic about inclusivity etc are worth nothing when folks are angry about skyrocketing housing prices and the like.

It's like the Liberals are trying to make sure they lose elections.

It's the whole woke mix.  It actually takes quite a bit to turn people to more radical right thinking. Borders is a major issue of course but it goes beyond that.

This reaction is predictable and inevitable. It'll be interesting to see how it affects us - as I recall trudeau freaked when some of those people who just got elected spoke to canadian politicians in the past, i wonder how relations will be now.

The irony is this is killing the Conservatives - in the UK, too. They promised to lower immigration to 100k but it's risen to 685k instead and is estimated to be going up another 100k this year. They also can't seem to get a handle on illegal migration. This has all caused, guess what, a big bump in housing costs and made it harder to get in to see a doctor. NOT a coincidence. They're going to be slaughtered by Labour, a left wing party, which is promising to drastically cut immigration.

That would actually be pretty funny. Losing to a left-wing party because of their anti-immigrant stance, It's been about a hundred years since we saw that in Europe  :)

People go for ideology right up until it hurts their pocketbook and they can't eat. As the saying goes a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged.
