Young Canadians want homes and pets over marriage and kids: survey | Financial Post

The recent survey found 61 per cent of Canadian Gen Z respondents would choose pets over children

“After watching boomer generations and beyond stay cemented in the same place for decades, Gen Z is keen to adopt lifestyles that allow for greater flexibility and fewer long-term commitments,” the report notes.

In decades past, Canadian couples could afford to have the home and wedding of their dreams, but nowadays more couples have to choose.

The survey found 73 per cent of Canadians Gen Zs see homeownership as a primary life goal, though 61 per cent of respondents are unsure if they will be able to afford it.

Meanwhile, 42 per cent of respondents believe marriage is an important life goal, while 41 per cent see it as necessary.

It's worth reading the whole article.

So basically things have gotten so bad in Canada that people don't want to have children or spouse. They'll settle for a dog if they can have a small apartment to live in that they own.

Which means our birth rate declines further. Which means we are going to become more and more reliant on immigrants just to hold our population level. We are currently nowhere even close to replacing ourselves and that's about to drop.

We used to say get woke go broke, turns out the correct phrase was get woke go extinct

Sure, and to someone like you that's probably worth more than the value of a relationship or having children.

But I doubt these kids are  in it for the profit like that. They're in it because they know if they own a home they'll have some control over how much they pay to have a roof over their head tomorrow and whether or not that roof will still be there. However if they don't then their rent could double tomorrow if they have to move and they would be out of a home.

The kids are seeing inflation and are petrified. They look at home ownership as One of the only ways they have to protect against that. So this is driven more by shelter insecurity than profit motive. Rents are going up far faster than wages and the only way they can get around that is to get into their own home, so they're choosing to avoid wives and children and focusing on housing that they probably won't be able to afford anyway.

You can if you have a credit card.
