Not the global warming, it could take decades. But this one is in the immediate future.

The new Axis of tyrants has risen and is the reality. Pretending that it's not there, or that it would go away, dissipate by itself is a glaring and possibly, defining weakness.

Russia and Belarus; Iran; North Korea; Syria; a few satellites; and a China in a vague background. All with nukes and ready to spread them on a whim. Ready?

Pretending business as usual; discussions in "security councils" and world soccer is the same kind of ignorant bliss that led the western world into the firestorm of WWII only this time: with nukes.

It doesn't appear that the West has answers... even that it's thinking, or even trying. Scary.

Secondly, the dictators solved the challenge of popular discontent. In these blissful decades of amazing global cooperation and steady growth in numbers if not broad prosperity, endless parties and scandals, the dictators did not waste their time: they invented; tested and honed, optimized the technology of suppression of popular discontent. "Freedom will prevail because like it's promised by something, right?" No. That was only a rosy weed-induced dream but in this reality, look:

Russia; Syria; Belarus; Iran; Hong Kong (China);

for a generation now, the dictators haven't lost once to a popular uprising. They can rule forever now. Done. While you partied and more, pumped them with uncountable billions, for great and dependable services.

Third, the West has lost the potential and the power of deterrence. NATO was seen as a formidable deterrent and containment force globally, without an equal. Putin and dictators didn't like that, obviously. They said that much, openly. And so, while the great partying went on, the dictators worked on eroding and testing it. Today, Russian planes and missiles are flying in the NATO airspace followed by diplomatic notes of concern. To Putin and Un, the modern totalitarian Hitlers: the notes? Why, notes though? But what else, what can be effective in thought and reality, what works? Who knows that - maybe you would know? A battalion of five super-modern tanks arrived to defend the border country. To a great music and politicians speeches. Who is the great show expected to impress and deter? Putin, with his thousands though far less advanced? Xis, with millions? Will NATO succeed in beating off an invasion of its member by conventional means? Will it even fight? So many questions, these days where it used to be a given, a certainty. And this defines a delta, a gradient: it is clear and apparent already. Is it pointing in the right direction, for our shared future?

There's more, that will be addressed at some point but here's the essential question though:

Will it all go away, disappear in the air all by itself, with an uncertain shrug of a shoulder and blinking an eye? Why would it? Is there any logic or reason to believe that it would go away if we do nothing and keep doing it?

No. Every hour and month of great dithering and procrastination makes and will keep making the dictators bolder and stronger. Now is the best situation you will have in a long while, the horizon isn't clear, but the weakness and indecision draw the shaking old finger from the decision board like a powerful magnet. Lack of spirit, will and resolve what can it be replaced or substituted with? It already happened like this, perhaps not once. Only this time, with nukes. There's always the first time.

Disagree.

In 1962, JFK read Tuchman's Guns of August. He worried about world powers badly negotiating. This was the world that he knew.

Yet by 1962, the world was stable. We had survived 30 years of war.

Men like Nixon, Kennedy, Reagan, Bush Snr - Brezhnev, Trudeau Snr had all lived through WWII.

=====

IMHO, Tuchman's book refers to our current age - the 2020s. This is our current world. Like the late 1800s or 1910 or so, we have States struggling for dominance, and people who have never known war in their lifetime.

A new Axis of totalitarian dictators with massive numbers of nukes, brazen, emboldened and ready to share them: the first time in history.

West, divided and uncertain: the first time since the last great war.

No thinking, little resolve and reason: a sign of generational weakness.

Keep trying arguing with the reality: but it isn't interested in wise speeches. You show it that works and that's the only way to pass the challenge into the new age. Everything else is a fail.

Disagree.

Your thinking lead us to the cataclysm of August 1914.

This is not the 1930s.

We in the West won in 1989/1991. People are now free to travel. We can talk to one another without borders. This is good.

Americans, you have your way of doing things. We others have our way.

As they say, this is no longer a monopolar world.

The past is not a guarantee of the future or anything. If it wasn't true we would have 100-year olds beating records and excelling in all spheres of humanity. Yet inability to perceive the reality objectively, think and act when and as needed is the essence of what is called "decay". If the West fails to act now you will be traveling under totalitarian cameras and live entire life under the microscope of the social credit. Step either way from the perfect totalitarian line and no one would even recall that you existed. What, you think someone promised you anything?

... it's with Putins, Uns, Xis and ayatollahs of the world that is coming, he's going to seek "multi-polarity". Like they would talk multi-polarity because they couldn't just come and take it all, right?

Between a debilitating weakness of spirit and a delusion, which is better to the evolution? Ask Her maybe She would tell you.. in her own words, of course.
