CdnFox Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 (edited) https://financialpost.com/news/google-rejects-trudeaus-olive-branch-threatens-news-link-block-over-new-law Alphabet Inc.’s Google moved closer to blocking Canadians from viewing news links on its search engine, after it rejected government regulations meant to placate its concerns about an impending online content law. It’s the latest blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government and its efforts to compel Google and Meta Platforms Inc. to negotiate payments with local publishers under the Online News Act, due to come into effect on Dec. 19. Google’s move comes about a month after Meta similarly dismissed the regulations and said that it will continue blocking users in Canada from seeing news on Facebook and Instagram to avoid running afoul of the law. So now we wont' even be able to use google to look up old newspaper articles or the like. What in god's name is he playing at? How is this helping canada? Hasn't he had enough disasters to cope with already this year? Edited October 7, 2023 by CdnFox Quote There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

I have a VPN and as far as Trudeau is concerned, I live in Austin Texas. Canadians are far too savvy to have someone like Trudeau tell them what to do. Nobody will keep me from the content that I want to watch and failure of which, would just do what I know a few people have, move to the US to a state that fully respects such freedoms. I don't think it will come to that, but it's just sad we have a virtue signaling leader who cannot read the room. Quote

The average person doesn't get this and it WILL limit choice for a LOT of people. Sure - there are still search engines who won't be doing that but again - its going to impact a lot of people. Google is still b far the most used. There's always a way around things, but if it leaves most people in the dust then it's just another form of censorship Quote There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

The only merciful thing, is he couldn't in a G7, make our country adopt equally draconian laws or regulations, but won't stop him from trying. Quote

Yes, and as we've now learned that was a paid advertisement. Just 4 more legislative sessions to go before he's unable to do more harm. Quote There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data
blackbird Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 Microsoft Edge browser has recently changed and taken the news off it's home page. They have replaced it with computer gaming advertising and apps. This is disappointing but is Trudeau and Liberal's fault for their radical intervention in online platforms. Quote

Trudeau convinced everyone that it was Google, Meta et al responsibility to vet and censor what it's users post. He was wrong and I applaud Google, Meta et al for standing up.
