in this specific case, Larochelle met the standard

and you can break it down into the component parts of the action

then compare and contrast it with historic VC's

bear in mind that the VC would not be for Larochelle personally

he had never sought any glory for himself

the VC is for the Regiment, the Corps, the Army, the Nation

something everyone could take pride in

so to use your NHL analogy

this is like the RCR won the Stanley Cup, with Larochelle scoring the winning goal, game 7 in OT

then government bureaucrats stepped in and cancelled the series

moreover, the bureaucrats don't even have a case

if you read the excuses as to why they say the VC cannot be awarded

it's all made up bullshit, there is no rule against it

it just comes down to the bureaucrats got it wrong in the first place

and now they will go to any lengths no matter how absurd, simply to refuse to admit it

and that's Canada

Canada always gets it wrong with anything military related

then just stays the course relentlessly, no matter how imbecilic the results

Sure, but who says that the only award has to come from our governmental bureaucracy? 

If enough members of our military agree that someone is a hero, and demand that he's treated as such, doesn't that make mean that he's hero? Not even just a hero, but a hero among heroes.

Would you be more proud to receive a VC, or to have thousands of veterans and soldiers from every branch of the military come to Ottawa to celebrate your heroism, courage, loyalty and your contribution to victory? 

If I rescue someone from a burning building there's no way that I'm letting Trudeau or one of his appointees hang a symbol off my neck. I'd rather live the rest of my life anonymously.

no soldier sets out to be a hero

one only seeks the acceptance of ones peers, to be just another face in the ranks

but if fate intervenes, one is bound to bear the burden

it would be Canada's Victoria Cross, you would wear it for the Regiment, Corps, Army & Nation

but if actions by a soldier of The Royal Canadian Regiment

which warrant the awarding of a Canadian Victoria Cross

are not recognized appropriately as being such

then the Canadian Victoria Cross will never be awarded

at which point it is rendered meaningless

 thus the entire awards system is rendered meaningless by that default thereafter

and the void of meaninglessness simply expands from there

until you end up in a pseudo Communist Post National State

where, as you say,  Baristas are honoured for their tribulations working at Starbucks

while the entire Canadian military is dismantled slowly but surely
