23 December 2005 -- Reports say an Italian judge has issued European arrest warrants for 22 purported CIA operatives in connection with the alleged kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric from Milan in 2003.
I wonder why the Italians are making such a move, if they support the Us 'War on Terror'. Really, though, I wonder whether there should be and independent 'World Police' (besides 'Team America') with jurisdiction anywhere. The UN has proven corruptable and ineffective recently, although with some re-tooling, and a mandate amendment, something like them could possibly be effective.

The Italians aren't, an Italian judge is. Remember that he's issuing these warrants, in part, because the Italian government has refused to even ask the US for the extradition of these people.

BTW, if the US wants to come here and "kidnap" the entire Khadr family I won't get very upset.

Obviously you do not consider your civil liberties to be very important. I doubt you be be so sanguine about it if the US targeted one of your friends or relatives.

Come on Spar....

No one is going to target a law abiding family. Where there's smoke, there's fire. All these muslim a88holes have been looking for attention for years. Now they're getting the attention they deserve. Clean em out of here and fire the immigration department, all of them.

Good riddance.

And that does not include any people who have immigrated here and are decent law abiding people trying to make a better life for yourselves.

To hell with the rest.

We already have at least one innocent Canadian that was carted off the Syria by the US for torture. If the Khadars are guilty of the something other that expressing obnoxious points of view then put them in front of a judge and prove it.

I find it ironic that the very people who distrust any gov't run social programs are more than willing to trust gov't run police forces.

If you want to pay for that paralyzed Khadr guy's health (who was fighting and trying to kill Canadian soldiers), go ahead.

Traiterous *bleep*

I do NOT want to pay for his healthcare; let Al Qaeda - and you - pay for his lifetime healthcare.

ROME, Italy (AP) — A judge has issued European arrest warrants for 22 purported CIA operatives in connection with the alleged kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric from a Milan street in 2003, a prosecutor said Friday....The 22 people allegedly were involved in the kidnapping of cleric Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, also known as Abu Omar.

The cleric, believed to belong to an Islamic terror group...

Just because he was expelled from Egypt for involvement in the assassination attempt on Hosni Mubarak, doesn't mean he was involved in an Islamic terror group.

...…was allegedly abducted on a Milan street on February 17, 2003, before being flown to Egypt, where he was reportedly tortured.  The operation was believed part of the CIA’s “extraordinary rendition” program in which terrorism suspects are transferred to third countries where some allegedly are subjected to torture.

There ya go. It's an open and shut case.

Seriously though...here is a reason why I think that Berlusconi is alright:

Earlier this week, Premier Silvio Berlusconi, a top U.S. ally, suggested the government may not push the prosecutors’ request with Washington saying, “I don’t think there is any basis in the case.”

He has brains and recognizes that there doesn't seem to be much of a jurisdiction, either.

Castelli, for his part, has also questioned Spataro’s motives in the case, suggesting the prosecutor was a leftist militant and anti-American.

A leftist militant anti-American judge in Europe? Say it isn't so. <_<

There wasn't anything manifest that prevented them from sharing

Jamie Gorelick's wall

The disclosure that Jamie Gorelick, a member of the September 11 commission, was personally responsible for instituting a key obstacle to cooperation between law enforcement and intelligence operations before the terrorist attacks raises disturbing questions about the integrity of the commission itself. Ms. Gorelick should not be cross-examining witnesses; instead, she should be required to testify about her own behavior under oath. Specifically, commission members need to ask her about a 1995 directive she wrote that made it more difficult for the FBI to locate two of the September 11 hijackers who had already entered the country by the summer of 2001

Shady,

or at the very least, have a spine to responsd to your lies

I must admit that I had not heard of this before...

Jamie Gorelick's wall
but I still contend that the main reason information is not shared is 'protectionism' within departments. There are a prolific number of examples of this, one only has to read. The book by John Walsh about the abduction of his son held many examples of this. Only recently has there been a serious attempt to coordinate departments, and I am sure many still balk at it. However, some good has come of cooperation, such as the 'Amber Alerts', etc.

This is extremely petty, inaccurate and against forum rules. I suggest you prove your words or retract them.

Besides, you and Burns missed the point (surprise, surprise)...

Really, though, I wonder whether there should be and independent 'World Police' (besides 'Team America') with jurisdiction anywhere.
This was my point that I wished to raise for debate.

I was reading news releases on GlobalSecurity.org and came across the news snippet that I posted. It got me thinking as to whether a global police force should do the job or should it be left to individual countries and their own legal systms.

Italy court rules government can oppose indictment of agents in CIA abduction trial

[JURIST] The Italian Constitutional Court [official website] ruled Thursday that the Italian government can seek to quash the indictments of 33 American and Italian agents who allegedly kidnapped [JURIST news archive; WP timeline] Egyptian cleric Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr [Wikipedia profile] in 2003. State lawyers will argue against the indictments on the grounds that investigators considered secret documents in collecting evidence, violating state secrecy laws.

It got me thinking as to whether a global police force should do the job or should it be left to individual countries and their own legal systms.
What do you propose? To be able to act independently of any individual country, such a hypothetical "global police force" would need to master an extreme amount of force. It would also need financing. I doubt that is possible except for in a dream.
Egypt cleric at center of Italy CIA kidnapping case freed from prison

US and Italian intelligence agents have pressed for a political resolution [JURIST report] of their case.

Who will win: the Italian intelligence agents or the Italian government or the Italian prosecutors?

Since the American agents have already left Italy, hopefully members of the CIA will just passively watch on the sidelines.

Italy hunts CIA operatives -- policing police?
Italy-who? Who exactly is custodying the custodians?

We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society.
