Will Early Election Derail Important Issues?

Recommended Posts

Martin's Sunday Address

The address was aired one day after Martin warned an early election would derail progress on a host of issues, from aboriginal poverty to medical wait times.
"Taking responsibility is about more than words. It's about action," he said.

Martin is obviously worried about the up coming election.

He seems to almost threaten the voters to keep him in because of issues he feels only he can handle.

Has Martin's actions to date been enough to keep the voters happy?

Is he right about the "issues" being derailed by an early election?

No he isn't right about "the issues" being derailed by an election. He has had a lot of time to act and hasn't done so. This is his second broadcasted attempt at pleading for more time. Very unprofessional. Time to deal with the fact that he didn't earn a majority last time around.

Yeah, I don't get it. He promised to call an election after the Gomery Report was released. Apparently there's more to come early in the new year. So he's asking for at best 4 more months before an election, unless he's planning to not keep his word. Can't solve all the issues he's naming in 4 months, or at all with a minority government that has to pay off the NDP every time they want to get something done. And of course Layton is trying to squeeze as much out of them as he can.

I think it's all about posturing. The conservatives are putting the onus on the NDP for calling an election. Martin's trying to make them both look bad by wanting to go to the polls, while at the same time knowing he can't get anything done without them. And he's trying to get more time so he can try to massage the latest polling numbers.

Meanwhile our waiting times in Canada are still not being helped and Martin's advesarial relationship with the U.S. is only making things worse for major sectors of our economy and ticking off our biggest trading partner.

Knowing Martin the way I know Martin he has HUGE plans for addressing the medical wait times before the election.

You see, the Liberals have already decided that they will be very selective about which wait lines will be shortened and which won't.

Now, with an election looming, Martin needs those extra 4 months to figure out which illnesses have the longest wait times in the iffy ridings ... VOILA ... those will be the ones he will promise to shorten.

He's one smart cookie .... not that one needs to be too smart to outsmart the Canadian public.
