RB Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 What do you think about these reality shows? The star of the apprentice show is Donald Trump, with his massive ego, demanding answers. Reality shows encourages compulsive viewing Everyone is making it big, Donald well, he already have it all, the TV ratings, all the folks are writing books, the companies used in the show plus the viewers get a first hand experience on firing. I mean here is a show of ambitious people looking for a 6 figure salary are put into two teams, first men vs. women, then reshuffled, then mixed-up So first much conflict all around working in teams and on top of this put to work in pressured environment. This interview is a real competition, and so in the end if you are part of the losing team someone is fired. I brought it up because my kid said they were watching earlier episodes in their business class Quote
August1991 Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 What do you think about these reality shows?<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Uh, football for girly-men? ---- Robert Redford made a very good movie called Quiz Show explaining what reality TV is all about. The shows are cheap to produce, and they offer drama and the ultimate attraction: money. It is ironic that US TV networks have gone back to the 1950s. Maybe this is just a phase but I think it's related to the competition of so many other distractions (DVDs, computer games, Internet, satellite TV). Better amateur sociologists (e.g. Noam Chomsky) can gladly invent arbitrary explanations for this phenomenon, as any other. Quote

Black Dog Posted October 28, 2005 Report Posted October 28, 2005 The bloom nay be off the reality rose. Reality shows hit hard times The big chill that blew through reality TV this summer is starting to look like a deep freeze.Nearly every returning entry in the once white-hot genre is either flat or down among the broadcasters in primetime. Even unscripted's most reliable war horse, CBS' "Survivor," is flagging, down 19 percent in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic in the first three weeks of the year versus either the same period last year or the entire run. ... "I think what's happened is we are at a maturing phase for reality programming," said Preston Beckman, executive VP strategic program planning at Fox. "It used to be you could put on any reality show and get a rating. That's not the case anymore." For myself, I'm into shows like "Lost" (which reminds me in many ways of an old movie serial), "the Office", the shamefully underrated "DaVinci's Inquest" (now "Davinci's City Hall") and "Arrested Development" (the sharpest show on television, bar none). I find reality TV to be far less believable than any of these shows, filled as they are with unsympathetic stock characters. Uh, football for girly-men? Really August? "Girly-men"? Quote
BHS Posted October 29, 2005 Report Posted October 29, 2005 Have to agree with you, BD. Arrested Development is probably the best comedy ever written for TV. I'd watch the same episode of AD a hundred times in a row rather than subject myself to reality programming. Don't confuse electoral success (which came be attributed to a wide variety of factors) with broad support. That's the surest way to wind up on the sidelines." - Black Dog
Black Dog Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Well, then you'll be pleased to know that "A.D" returnes Monday, November 7 with two back to back episodes. Check your local listings.* *I've always wanted to say that. Quote
Argus Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 What do you think about these reality shows? I think that if we could figure out a way to beam some kind of sterility ray out of the tube at anyone who watches they we'd vastly improve the human race. Montgomery Burns Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 I don't really watch reality shows, unless Dog the Bounty Hunter is considered a reality show. However, I have watched Gene Simmon's Rock n' Roll School a few times. It was alright. Anyhow, tell her "CONGRATULATIONS!" Does your little one talk about the upcoming Canadian election at all? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My experience of last election My daughter and I were old faithful as we attended the agendas of some of the various parties meeting. The conservatives were rather vocal “ooh! young people!” and immediately proceed to put us on a pedestal. All the while we are thinking gosh, this party is full of old “white” men. Well, we bought into the conservative fiscal polices, that’s all. Clearly, it was just not a right fit. The NDP would never help me become a rich gal and my little one got worried. So, my liberal friends I have decided for now anyway that I am a liberal and an average Canadian. And to my conservative & NDP friends I say to you I am a hopeless Liberal. Quote
