Armed Vigilantes To Patrol US-Cda Border

'Vigilantes' at border, bearing arms

U.S. and Canadian law enforcement officials say they have serious reservations about pistol-packing members of an unregulated ragtag army, comprised mostly of Vietnam veterans, scouting the border for illegal immigrants and terrorists.

Some officers worry armed confrontations could take place along the 32-kilometre sector south of Vancouver from Blaine to Sumas, Wash., which the Minuteman members plan to watch. The highly porous border is a major two-way smuggling route for drugs, weapons and illegal immigrants flowing both ways.

"When we do police operations we co-ordinate with recognized law enforcement agents so at least we know where each one of us is -- if other groups come into that sphere or that area where we are in and they are armed, they could very well be putting themselves in harm's way," said RCMP spokesman Sergeant John Ward.

He also warned that a confrontation could happen between law enforcement officials and the Minuteman members if they cross the border by mistake. Canadians are barred from carrying weapons while Americans have a constitutional right to bear arms.

What a bunch of flakes. Sounds like the US could use some healthy gun control legislation. I think it's terrible that these guys want to prevent their own citizens from obtaining some of that good ole BC bud.

Try as I might, I just can't see having a bunch of armed white supremacists marching along the Canada/U.S. border as a good idea.

See here (with photos), here, and here.

First off, to say they are all white supremacist is an opinion at best. 2ndly the right to bear arms is protected by the 2nd amendment. Third, according to el paso sheriffs office crime in his jursidiction has gone from 30 calls a month to less then 10 since this has started. Also your "white suprmacist" saved somebodies life recently that otherwise would have surely died cross the rio.

"Even your own president has condemned these people.

Your logic boggles the mind."

As you remind us time and time again, our own president has commited gross errors in judgment in the past, why would this be any different?

Whats so mind boggling to understand. That to assume all border patrols down there are white supramicist? what if some of the border patrols are black or latino? kinda throws that out of the window doesnt it.

The 2nd amendment protects are right to bear arms. Yep last time i checked thats what it said. Mind boggling.

Yes i understand that some white supremicist groups see this as an oppurtonity to commit violence, i just choose to defend those who are really there to do good work, like save a life.

I really don't see the big deal. Its their time to waste. Whats the worst that can happen, A few dead drug smugglers? big deal. Using pistols though is kinda stupid, they need some ar15s. may be we should start a charitable organization to have an exchange program. Pistols for assault rifles.

First of all, you're a moron.

Actually, that's all I've got to say about that.

First off, to say they are all white supremacist is an opinion at best.

No one said they were all white supremacists. But the Minutemen's core demographic is constituted of right-wing extremists, including many outright racists. But that's just the cherry on top of this. The fact is, having a band of unaccountable, armed "do-gooders" roaming around is a sure recipe for disaster.

What the US needs is to gain control of its borders. Canadians often feel the same. The difference is some Americans are actually doing something about it. Regardless of their feelings in other respects if's hard to condemn them for being concerned about the crime and mass illegal immigration which continues to swamp border communities.

If they are concerned, they should find outlets other than vigilantism.

If drug-smugglers and white supremacists get into gun-battles in wilderness areas along the boarder, that sounds like a win-win situation to me. I hope there's tons of casualties on both sides.

If I get a gun and shoot any of these armed idiots that steps one inch over the border, will I get some kind of medal?

No, but if you're lucky perhaps Black Dog would ridicule you.

Give me a break. Given that drug smugglers whole raison d'etre is to not get caught, and given the level of sophistication of modern cross-border smuggling operations, why would anyone assume for a second that 60 senior citizens toting pistols would be any more successful than the cops?

They shoud be in Iraq.

:lol::P

To be fair, most of the people involved are (according to the National (Com)Post) "disabled Vietnam veterans in their 60s", I'd say they've done their time. Now, why anyone would think a group of disabled Vietnam veterans in their 60s would be an more effective deterrent to drug smugglers and terrorists than, say, the DEA, is another question.

You can remove leftwing disciple of tolerance from your resume, and add christian basher.

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2.../1/161251.shtml

Roger Baldwin, founder and leading force in the ACLU until his death in 1981, asserted the partisan nature of the ACLU agenda. Said Baldwin, "I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property." And he concluded with "COMMUNISM IS THE GOAL."

Aw, shove it. I didn't bash "Chirstians" (this time): I was specifically bashing the white Taliban assclowns you linked to.

Anyone who believes "the state's authority is subservient to the Creator's authority, and when in conflict, government must adjust its position to conform to God's natural law" is pushing for the same kind of society we see in Saudi Arabia, Iran etc.

And really, spare me the redbaiting (based on an utterance soemone made in the 1930's and in spite of the simple fact that, in 1940, the ACLU formally barred Communists from leadership or staff positions, and later took the position that it didn't even want them as members). And, above all, spare us all any more NewsMax garabage.I know you work for them and all but come on.

Nonsense.

I think that pretty much describes your contributions here to date. As a response, it's fairly typical for you: no attempt to address any arguments, nothing. Just vaguely condescending dismissals designed to project an air of superiority when, in fact, all it does is betray your own intellectual bankruptcy. Keep it up!

I think you should look up what the term means. These people are not vigilanties unless they're stringing up suspected criminals anyway. They are patrolling the borders and calling police or border patrol when they see people crossing the border illegally. Even if they stop them and make 'citizens arrests" that is within the law and their rights so long as they immediately turn them over to police.

Have you ever made an arguement, certainly not in this thread.

That's rich, coming from you who linked to the radical MediaMatters and Pandagon (which has gone to shit since Ezra Klein - who was a reasonable liberal - left Pandagon).

I'n m surprised you didn't link to Oliver Willis.

Fair enough. But I think the point stands that these fellas are, at best, clowns and, at worst, dangerous.

Wait, let's give this Christian Dominionist idea a chance. I think it would be very convenient for the rest of us if all of these people would just go to South Carolina and leave the rest of us alone. If anything, we should be helping to promote this idea.

Give me a break. Given that drug smugglers whole raison d'etre is to not get caught, and given the level of sophistication of modern cross-border smuggling operations, why would anyone assume for a second that 60 senior citizens toting pistols would be any more successful than the cops?

Don't the RCMP and DEA frequently complain of not enough manpower to effectively patrol the border?

At any rate, (shrug) why would I care? If the withered old kooks are just wasting their time, that's fine with me. If they wind up in gun battles with drug-smugglers, so much the better. Either way, it makes little difference to me. I can't really think of any *good* reason for somebody to be sneaking across the border, so I can't see any reason why I should be concerned about these guys. Perhaps some Canadians are offended that these angry old morons see Canada in the same light as Mexico, but again, what of it? I put little weight on their opinion. Whether they wind up shooting drug dealers, getting shot by drug dealers, shooting each other, shooting hapless campers, being mauled to death by bears, whatever... not my problem, as long as they stay on their own side of the border. If they stray across the border, of course, I'm counting on I Miss Trudeau to take care of business.
