August1991 Posted June 6, 2017 Report Posted June 6, 2017 One can change easily one's religion. It is not so easy to change one's skin. I suspect that this is the cause of modern America's confusion with the outside world. Quote

August1991 Posted June 8, 2017 Author Report Posted June 8, 2017 (edited) Betsy: In the late 18th century, everyone had a religious affiliation and it was very difficult -impossible- to change this. At its origins, America was based on "freedom of religion" - meaning, the State should not use religious affiliation in making decisions. (Indeed, this idea is part of the Bill of Rights, an initial amendment to the US Constitution.) Nowadays, in western civilized society, people easily change religion, without qualm. But even with lots of money, neither Cher nor Michael Jackson are either blonde or blue-eyed. In the early 21st century, an individual can change their religion, family name - even their nose size. But an individual cannot change their skin colour. Edited June 8, 2017 by August1991 Quote
August1991 Posted July 2, 2017 Author Report Posted July 2, 2017 (edited) Betsy, I know that you're a Christian, so let me make my idea more clear: The State can discriminate individuals on features the individual can change, control. (In a criminal trial, a judge should consider the fact that the accused is a Buddhist or has tattoos.) The State has no right to discriminate, treat differently, individuals who are different because of differences beyond the individual's control. (In a criminal trial, a judge should ignore the fact that you are O+ blood type or have brown eyes.) Edited July 2, 2017 by August1991 Quote
