What did Osama bin Laden say as to why he went from being a US asset to someone fighting the US? Short version: He viewed the American military presence in Saudi Arabia as an insult to Islam.

When they state their reason is for their religion, why do you disagree with them? I was watching a little discussion the other day involving Sam Harris. He said the claim that only a tiny minority of Muslims are violent is entirely wrong. In what he stated was his very conservative estimation, at least 20% of Muslims are Islamists. That would be about 300 million people. This was based on a study done of voting patterns in Muslim nations which had votes, and how many voted for Islamist parties which were running on theocratic rule and Sharia law, as well as surveys in other countries. I think his estimate was, indeed, very conservative. If you look at answers to surveys in Muslim countries about approval for death by stoning for adultery, say, or execution for apostasy or blaspheme or homosexuality, and other such harsh Islamic laws it's way over 20% of the Muslim world, and closer to 50%. This is the fertile ground from which terrorism and other religious violence grows. Edited April 2, 2017 by Argus

Not just that. I was watching Christopher Hitchens dual with someone over Islam last night, and he pointed out that of the top reasons Al Quaeda gives for going to war with the West, number three is that the West pressured Indonesia into stopping its slaughter and oppression in East Timor and granting them their freedom. Most of the people of East Timor are Christians, you see. It is forbidden for a land ruled by Islam (even for a short period of time apparently) to ever be ruled by anyone else. This was the reason given for their bombing of Australian tourists in Bali, and for a bombing at an Australian embassy and at a UN compound.
