Age of Consent

Recommended Posts

I tend to think that 30 is about right. By 30, if you don't know what you're doing or you make a mistake, it's your own fault. Before 30, you can make errors because you just don't know.

True, some people can wisely decide before 30 but I suspect that this is mostly luck. Others, 30 years of age or more, consistently make bad decisions - and this is not chance. Anyone over 30 has had ample time to learn.

Humans being human, I think that people over 30 should be held responsible for their decisions.

How relevant is this? A democracy requires a simple rule to decide who can put a ball in the large jar from which our politicians randomly draw to determine who will be our next leader, for the next few years.

Who's responsible for their decisions until then?

Who do I sue for damages if a 29 year old vandalizes my property?

.

While I should really avoid yet another one of these types of threads I must ask you: really?

The premise of the thread is stupid (note to moderators: I am not calling the poster stupid, but the content).

And you wish to engage with this nonsense?

Gah! A pox on you and August.

I think it should depend on more factors than just age. Left handed or right handed? Male pattern baldness? Who's your favourite movie star?

There's so much to take into account.

"Consent" for all things? Sex, voting, drinking?

I think ideally that age should NOT even be a qualifying factor for most significant things but that maturity be the guiding concept. We have this in part through things like licence requirements for driving (with a minimum age also) licences whereby we have to prove a minimum understanding. It is hard to actually put in place rules of 'maturity' though. Age is just an unfortunate expedient unless others could somehow figure out a way that most people would agree to as measures of 'maturity' for things like voting, procreation, or other freedoms.
