In France or the US, journalists (fan boys) see their elections as sports games: Team A vs. Team B. In English Canada, many voters see it the same way: left vs right. In Quebec, also, it's separatism vs union.

I see Canada's federal politics/elections differently. In a Canadian federal election, across Canada, different languages, time zones, farms vs oil/cars, there are too many A vs B divides.

What makes this remarkable society, Canada, work?

In 1910, the so-called Austrian-Hungarian Empire had achieved a similar level of civilisation. Lemberg was a multicutural city of different languages. What made a place such as Galicia so peaceful for so long?

Disciplined, honest government? Or respect/care for local religions? And why did the Austrian-Hungarian Empire disappear?

Possibly. But then, given the fatalities, all European countries (and some abroad) also chose the losing side.

Harper offers discipline. Trudeau Jnr, apparently, wants to do politics differently and offers care. His father, IMHO, made Canada work through discipline. Laurier chose the "sunny ways".

Perceptions are one thing, and reality something else.
