Topaz Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 Former MP Del Masto get i month in jail and probation, which is just, but Doug Findley who was charged with Election fraud, was able to pay a 50,000 in a plea deal to stay out of jail, seems like a double-standard here. https://ca.news.yahoo.com/sentencing-today-disgraced-former-conservative-mp-dean-del-080008522.html Quote
Keepitsimple Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 The one-month sentence is too light. It's pretty clear that the guy lied and cheated but the worst part is that he has shown no admission - no remorse. He's an embarrassment. All that said, at least he DID get some jail time - which should be a deterrent for those who would intentionally break the election laws. I'd have rather seen 6 months - after all, he'd be out in two months or less. It's the non-admission, no remorse that burns me most. Quote Back to Basics

Big Guy Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 I had wondered if, after the sentencing, Dean would get the "perp walk" in handcuffs through the public where the cameras would flash and questions shouted. This is the most humiliating aspect of a conviction where the convicted is paraded in front of the press. Looks like the only picture available is through CTV where Dean is led out a side door, in handcuffs, into a waiting van. I assume that he has suffered enough humiliation and shame. Anything under 2 years plus a day is provincial time meaning one could apply for parole after 1/3 but it's almost unheard of to actually get provincial parole if you're serving a short sentence. One gets out on good behaviour at 2/3 anyways so the parole committee is more inclined to allow one to just wait til mandatory release. Quote

Generally when someone is sentenced from court they are taken into custody in the courtroom and taken to the cells or the tombs as we call them. Usually in the basement of any courthouse. A wagon drives right into the building with a gate closing behind them where the prisoners are transfered. The public is not allowed in these areas. Thus is how it us in Canada. In the places I've seen. It could be different in the States. Quote

On Guard for Thee Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 Just watched the news and they now have video of Del Maestro being led shackled to a police van as he heads off to jail. On the one hand a little extreme for a guy who committed white collar crime, however in the position he fulfilled as Harpers front man, I am sure he would have made a lot of hay had the shoe (or shackles) been on some other parties feet. Vancouver King Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 If the shoe was on an opposition member's foot, Conservative headquarters would be scrambling to produce an attack ad. Big Guy Posted June 26, 2015 Report Posted June 26, 2015 I can anticipate the video of the former Parliamentary Secretary to the PMO walking in handcuffs and shackles in some third party campaign ads. Was Dean not the attack dog who trashed those in the opposition who were questioning election "irregularities"? Big Guy Posted June 26, 2015 Report Posted June 26, 2015 The party position on Dean is that he was just doing his job. His role was compared to that of an "enforcer" on a hockey team. He is described as not being the crude individual that we saw in question period but he was just doing his job - a job he really did not like. Sounds like the Nuremberg defence to me. You make your bed and you lie in it. Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
