Apparently you have no idea what you are talking about.

I do, you don't.

The PQ has the right to create their own registry and have announced they will go down that path.

They can create a registry, but it has no legal bearing, as the Canadian Firearms Act made legalities surrounding firearms ownership a Federal responsibility, governed by the Federal Government and administered by the RCMP's CFC......Quebec, or any Province, can't change Federal law.

And suggesting that all the guns around are pre 68 is laughable.

I didn't.........

All guns with serial numbers can have said serial numbers removed with a $ 7.50 file from Canadian Tire though, thus rendering a "gun registry" useless for your suggested use of "tracing guns".

You dont seem to comprehend the difference between a gun registry and a gun license. If everybody is playing by the rules, the difference is only technical, if not it becomes significant. Being naive is not a good way to look at public safety.

I'm still not sure what you're going on about. For most of the country's existence, we didn't have registry. I sell guns. My family has sold guns for 35 years. The registry does nothing.

It did one thing well..........waste money........A Quebec registry, that Quebec guns owners, as per the Federal Firearms Act, have no need to comply with, will waste even more money.

So because a criminal can file the numbers off a gun, we should just give up trying to track them. And because a bunch of people managed to drive home drunk tonight, we should abandon road checks. Brilliant!

Nice strawman........a criminal can file off a serial number in minutes, hence making the registry redundant.......Road checks are to catch drunk drivers....are you suggesting gun checks to ensure that criminals both register and maintain the serial numbers on their guns.......now that is brilliant!!!

SNs can be retrieved in a lab. But in any case it should be illegal to buy or sell a gun when there has been an attempt to file down the number. Your idea sees to go along the lines of so if criminals can break a law, then do away with the law. Now that is truly...brilliant

No they can't, a physical indent into metal, made smooth, can't be magically retrieved.

But in any case it should be illegal to buy or sell a gun when there has been an attempt to file down the number.

It is, but then so to is smuggling firearms in from the States, or using them in the commission of a crime.......doesn't seem to deter criminals within Canada though.

No, my idea is to not rely on a database, that costs millions of dollars to create and maintain, that can be thwarted with a $7.50 file from Canadian Tire.........Your idea is far from brilliant.

Head in the sand? You mean like supporting a Quebec registry, that Quebec gun owners are not required to partake in, and required criminals to buy/sell firearms that are registered to a registry that doesn't exist, furthermore a registry that can be defeated by a criminal making a trip down to Canadian Tire........Is that what you mean by head in the sand? It sounds more like one wheel in the sand to me.

Maybe get your head out of the sand and look at the US of A. Just dont keep your head up above the sand too long in case some nut job on his way to a high school with an AR 15 takes offense and blows a hole in it.

So how does a Quebec long gun registry prevent a nut job in the US of A from blowing a hole in a high school with an AR-15?

It doesnt. Apparently your geography suffers. Quebec isnt part of the US. But it may stop it from happening in Quebec. The states are still revelling in the dark ages with their utterly stupid, and oft mis quoted second amendment, but that is their problem and thats where I want it to stay.

And that has nothing to do with an already defunct registry.

Oh, so why bring up the US of A and AR-15s in a topic on a poorly proposed Quebec long gun registry?

And in your above example, how would a Quebec long gun registry prevent a high school student from taking his/hers AR-15 to school?

What is defunct is the idea that there is some weird freedom restriction on registering a gun. You want one, go git it boy, git you a bunch, as long as you want to do normal stuff with them, whats the problem...

How does a registry prevent one from doing "abnormal stuff" with them?

A logical person would see the benefit in ensuring those that might do "abnormal stuff" with their firearms don't get them in the first place.......but a registry doesn't do that.

Because a registry can trace that weapon back to you, where a simple license can not. But then you sort of sound like an NRA type, pining for an equivalent to a US style second amendment. Well you may get your wish if Harper stays in power, but I doubt he will, thankfully.

You keep repeating the same worthless talking points over and over whilst not addressing the holes in your argument.

I see, so if the RCMP grant a criminal or an insane person a firearms license, having his/her firearms registered (despite the already simple ways to defeat a registry) will prevent said person from committing gun related crimes?
