Argus Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Almost every topic started in this area of MLW is to castigate people and departments for screwing up, for mistakes, for dishonorable or just plain stupid things they've done. Then again, how often do politicians and the government do something worth congratulating. Having a little knowledge about the massive, bureaucratic inertia of Health Canada I have to say I congratulate Terrance Young for his determination over the years. I'll even congratulate the government for doing the right thing, though if it hadn't taken so long my congratulations would be more enthusiastic. In brief, Terrance Young's 15 year old daughter died from a side effect on a prescription drug. He spent years trying to make things safer and the industry more accountable, and finally got elected to parliament to continue his mission. It looks like he's just succeeded. This guy got involved, he used the democratic process, and he made a difference. http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/10/07/mps-14-year-mission-to-make-prescription-drug-use-safer-nearly-over-with-law-named-after-his-late-daughter/ Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley
Moonbox Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 After reading the article it seems literally insane that the government has to 'negotiate' recalls for potentially unsafe drugs with the pharmaceutical companies. Like you said, this is a good example of the government doing the objectively right thing. I wish it was less rare. Topaz Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 I've heard him stand up in Parliament and talk about this and I'm glad he finally may have closure. ALL drugs have side-effects and ALL people react differently to drugs. I, personally, take only one drug, because I can't find anything in the "natural" arena, to treat myself. People need to education themselves on what are the effects on the drugs they are taking, especially the statin drugs. Quote
