"The United States is deeply troubled by the continued use of mass trials and sentencing in Egypt, and particularly by today's death sentence against 683 defendants," Xinhua quoted White House spokesperson Jay Carney as saying in a statement.

Deeply troubled?

Washington has partially lifted its freeze on assistance to Egypt, enacted after Morsi's removal, with plans to deliver 10 Apache helicopters and some $650 million in military aid this year.

...hmmmm...

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

An eight-minute trial...and no defense allowed. Ye gods.

You can feel the wave of democracy spreading across Egypt and abroad since the Arab Spring started. :D

Good thing we joined the right side. It would have really sucked to get that wrong again.

Ha! :)

Yeah, predictable stuff.

Depends on whether or not these sentences are ever actually carried out.

I was talking to a Lebanese Christian guy the other day about this, and it didn't bother him at all. He said you need to make an example of these brotherhood types.

Even if there's some truth to that, I think it reasonable to wonder about the government who is carrying out such "examples."

I do remember reading somewhere that most of the sentences had been commuted to life in prison.

But an eight-minute trial with virtually no defense allowed is something supported only by reactionary servants of Power.

Even the US is being forced to acknowledge this now, having said little when the last 529 were sentenced to death.

Those outrages don't receive nearly the condemnation that Israel's self-defense efforts do (see related link). But are these innocents? Or people at war with Egypt? Morsi was ruthless as well. Why do we force the West's allies to fight with both hands tied behind their backs? The Muslim Brotherhood isn't exactly playing by Marquis of Queensbury rules either.

I understand that you and bud both think "Israel!" should be inserted into every discussion, no matter what.

Some of us disagree...but fill your boots.

That's not fair. I am pointing out an egregious double-standard.
