I'm not so sure. I never use the word myself, precisely because I don't wish to sound disrespectful...but as of now, it remains part of the official government and treaty language in some cases, so my understanding is that when used in terms of Status, treaties etc it is not meant disrespectfully.

I don't like how they've appropriated the word. All of us who live here are native to and natives of Canada (our home and native land).

I also don't like how on the one hand, we state that those who arrived here recently, i.e., immigrants, have the same rights, privileges, and are in every way shape and form, just as Canadians as those who were born here, even if their family has been here for ten generations. But on the other hand, we say that natives have more rights than us because they arrived here first. I'm not speaking of treaty rights. There seems to be an assumption, which you hear of repeatedly in threads like this, that this is really their land, and we are interlopers.

No one is indigenous to this continent. All humans moved here from elsewhere.

It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy

Anyone on CDN soil has the same rights.

They'd be wrong to say that.

In some ways they have less rights.

What ways?

Looks like they're getting more rights.

I really don't understand how they have ANY rights other than those of any other Canadian. Did we sign any treaties with them? Nope. Are people whose ancesters are half German and half Italian to get a special designation too? Nope.

Maybe if more people simply identified as being an Earthling all our differences would just fade away...before you know it we'd all be wondering what all the fuss was about and I bet going back to being different would be a lot harder to accomplish.

At the end of the day we're all in precisely the same place, directly above the centre of the Earth. It's just a matter of perspective is all. Start sharing it and maybe like the proverbial joke that flies faster than a plane we'll all get it.

Humanity needs a new starting point.

Your own country places very tight restrictions on who is allowed to come there and good for you. They won't listen to any of this "we're all humans and the whole planet is our home"-babble. If you didn't apply such policies you would be totally inundated with hundreds of millions of people who would just love to live in Canada.

Don't worry, I'm not under any illusions that we're about to break into a chorus of Kumbiya anytime soon. I do expect there will come a time when some people might regret not having given it a whirl but probably not until after the start of the next interregnum.

I think another 50,000 years of social evolution will do us wonders but maybe we'll have to wait until the next Pangaea so we can even more undeniably say we're all in the same place.

Do I regret not opening our doors so millions and millions of Indians and Chinese come here? Nope. Will I ever? Nope.

As selfish and heartless it may sound the only way a country like Canada and a number of others, perhaps Finland too, can remain as very pleasant places to live is that they are like VIP-clubs which have very strict rules as to who can become new members; It's not impossible to become a new member but certain criteria must be met.

That's the point we in Europe have lost the plot and we are a sinking continent. We are not considering our countries as VIP-clubs any more.

I couldn't agree with you more. It's ridiculous.
