Resurgence in Canadian Tennis

Many know of Milos Raonic who is a high profile men's player but he has yet to make it past the fourth round of of a major championship.

He made it a bit further this time; to the finals. I was routing for him even though I am a non-Canadian.

Uhh that was 2 and a half years ago. That year he made it to the Wimbledon semis.

Let's hope it doesn't take another 2 years for him to take the next step.

And let's pray he doesn't follow in the steps of Genie who's pretty lost right now.

It was nice to see Milos make the finals, but he's already 25 and time is quickly running out on his shot at a slam.

The people ahead of him are older. Murray and Djokovic are 29. Federer and Nadal are pretty much done. Out of his contemporaries, only Stan Wawrinka is "better" than him and only because he has a few majors under his belt. But Milos has beaten him.

We'll see. It was a forgone conclusion that Genie would be a top player in 2014 and now she can't get past the 3rd round of a major.

I think the coaching he's received from John McEnroe has been invaluable.

So the last post in this thread was two years ago.

Have we found another savour for Canadian Tennis.

When the heat was on, Bianca Andreescu found a way to raise her tennis game at the U.S. Open on a sweltering Wednesday night in New York City.

It was a hot and humid — stifling really — evening inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Andreescu couldn't stop sweating. She wiped her face. She wiped down her arms and legs. She tried to stay focused.

But the early going of her quarter-final match against Belgium's Elise Mertens was proving to be nearly impossible for Andreescu to make a shot.

Down one set and frustrated throughout much of the night, the 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., seeded 15th, was nonetheless able to compose herself under the bright lights, battling back against the No. 25 seed Mertens to win a gruelling three-set match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The match lasted two hours and one minute.

Andreescu is now the second Canadian to ever advance to the U.S. Open semifinals — after Carling Bassett in 1984 — and the fourth woman in history to reach the semifinals in her Open debut. Andreescu will play the No. 13-ranked Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic in Thursday night's semifinal.
